Gautam Gambhir Rohit Virat row: Uthappa questions coach after India’s ODI win

India’s ODI series win over South Africa should have been dominated by praise for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma — the two standout performers who shaped the 2–1 victory. Instead, a fresh controversy has emerged after former India batter Robin Uthappa questioned head coach Gautam Gambhir for not acknowledging the senior duo during his post-series press conference.

Kohli was the undisputed star of the series, amassing 302 runs at an average of 151, including two centuries. Rohit Sharma contributed 146 crucial runs at a strike rate above 110, providing stability at the top. Despite their influence, Gambhir chose to speak broadly about team planning rather than individually crediting the two veterans.

Uthappa said he found the omission surprising, adding that both players had silenced critics and reaffirmed their class. His remarks have reignited speculation around the rumoured rift between Gambhir and Kohli — a narrative that intensified after fans misread body language during the Ranchi ODI.

Even so, visual clips showed Gambhir chatting casually with Rohit, dismissing claims of internal discord. The head coach later reiterated the importance of experience in India’s ODI setup, especially with the 2027 World Cup two years away.

Meanwhile, Kohli and Rohit remain committed to the 50-over format after stepping away from Tests and T20Is. Their form has also propelled them to the top of the ICC ODI rankings, with Kohli rising to No. 2.

India now shifts focus to the home ODI series against New Zealand in January 2026 — a stage where Rohit and Kohli continue to be central figures, irrespective of chatter around Gambhir’s press-conference remarks.
