Guillermo del Toro Slams AI at Gotham Awards: Says ‘Frankenstein Was Made by Humans, for Humans’

At the 2025 Gotham Film Awards in New York, filmmaker Guillermo del Toro delivered a powerful message against the rising use of artificial intelligence in cinema. While accepting the Gotham Vanguard Tribute for his film Frankenstein, del Toro openly criticised AI, declaring on stage: “This film was willfully made by humans, for humans… f**k AI.”

Del Toro accepted the honour alongside lead actors Jacob Elordi and Oscar Isaac, who star as the Creature and Victor Frankenstein in his gothic sci-fi adaptation of Mary Shelley’s iconic 1818 novel. While thanking the cast and crew, he highlighted the irreplaceable human labour behind every creative decision in the film.

He emphasised,
“Every designer, builder, make-up artist, cinematographer, editor, composer—this tribute belongs to them. Their artistry is in every frame. This film was made by humans, for humans.”

His remarks sparked loud applause and laughter from the audience, with Elordi and Isaac showing visible support as the trio exited the stage.

The Gotham Awards had earlier announced Frankenstein as this year’s recipient of the Vanguard Tribute, honouring films that push artistic boundaries through bold, innovative vision. The film received a 13-minute standing ovation at the Venice Film Festival 2025, moving both Isaac and Elordi to tears.

Del Toro’s adaptation revisits Mary Shelley’s classic horror tale while focusing on themes of compassion, alienation, and the ethical limits of creation. India Today’s review noted that the film blends visual grandeur with emotional depth, adding that “the true horror isn’t in the stitched flesh, but in the absence of empathy.”

Frankenstein is currently streaming on Netflix.
