India has achieved a significant breakthrough in advanced defence technology with the successful long-duration ground test of an actively cooled scramjet engine, a critical component for hypersonic cruise missiles. The achievement marks a major milestone in the country’s efforts to develop next-generation weapon systems capable of sustained ultra-high-speed flight.
The test was conducted by the Defence Research and Development Organisation through its Hyderabad-based laboratory, Defence Research and Development Organisation, which has been leading India’s hypersonic technology programme. According to official statements, the full-scale scramjet combustor was tested for over 12 minutes at a specialised ground testing facility on January 9, validating both the engine design and the supporting infrastructure.

A hypersonic cruise missile is defined as a system capable of travelling at speeds exceeding Mach 5, or more than five times the speed of sound—roughly above 6,100 kilometres per hour—for extended durations. Unlike traditional rocket-powered missiles, hypersonic cruise missiles rely on air-breathing engines, allowing them to sustain high speeds within the atmosphere while remaining highly manoeuvrable.
The scramjet, or supersonic combustion ramjet, is at the heart of this capability. It enables combustion to occur at supersonic airflow speeds, a complex engineering challenge due to extreme temperatures, pressure, and aerodynamic forces. The successful test demonstrated stable combustion, effective thermal management through active cooling, and sustained engine performance over a long operational window.
The ground trial was carried out at the Scramjet Connect Pipe Test Facility, which simulated flight-like conditions required to assess the combustor’s endurance and reliability. Defence officials described the test as a “path-breaking milestone,” stating that it confirms the maturity of both the scramjet technology and the indigenous test infrastructure developed for hypersonic research.
This achievement builds upon earlier sub-scale and shorter-duration tests conducted in previous years, steadily moving the programme closer to operational readiness. The scramjet combustor and test facility were designed and developed domestically, with contributions from Indian industry partners, reflecting a strong push toward self-reliance in strategic defence technologies.
Reacting to the development, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh congratulated the scientists, engineers, and industry collaborators involved in the project. He said the successful test provides a strong technological foundation for India’s hypersonic cruise missile development and reinforces the country’s growing capabilities in advanced aerospace systems.
The Secretary of the Department of Defence Research and Development and Chairman of DRDO, Samir V Kamat, also praised the teams associated with the test, calling it a commendable achievement that positions India among a select group of nations with credible hypersonic technology programmes.
Hypersonic weapons are increasingly seen as game-changers in modern warfare due to their speed, manoeuvrability, and ability to evade existing missile defence systems. With this successful scramjet engine test, India has taken a decisive step toward joining the global leaders in hypersonic missile development, strengthening its strategic deterrence and technological edge.
