Jharkhand Labourer Beaten in Karnataka Over False Bangladeshi Suspicion

A disturbing incident of vigilante violence has come to light in Karnataka, where a migrant labourer from Jharkhand was brutally assaulted after being falsely suspected of being a Bangladeshi national. The attack occurred in Mangaluru, raising serious concerns over identity-based violence and the safety of migrant workers.

The victim, Diljan Ansari, has been working as a seasonal labourer in Karnataka for nearly 15 years. According to police sources, he was confronted by a group of four men who questioned his nationality and demanded that he produce identity documents. Despite repeatedly asserting that he is an Indian citizen, Ansari’s explanations were allegedly ignored.

The situation escalated when the attackers reportedly assaulted him with blunt objects, targeting his head and leaving him with severe injuries. The assault continued until a local woman intervened, forcing the assailants to flee the scene. The timely intervention is believed to have prevented further harm.

Police officials stated that Ansari did not immediately approach law enforcement after the attack. Fearing retaliation and possible harassment due to his status as a migrant worker, he reportedly returned to his hometown without filing a formal complaint. The incident came to public attention later after local leaders raised concerns and urged authorities to take action.

Following the matter being flagged, the police launched an investigation and verified Ansari’s identity documents. Officials confirmed that he is an Indian citizen and that the allegations branding him as a foreign national were entirely baseless. Based on witness statements and preliminary evidence, four suspects have been identified in connection with the assault.

The accused have been named as Sagar, Danush, Lalu Rathish, and Mohan. Investigators said the men are allegedly linked to a right-wing outfit, though further verification is ongoing. Multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita have been invoked against them, including charges related to attempt to murder, criminal intimidation, and unlawful assault.

Medical authorities confirmed that Ansari received treatment for his injuries and is currently recovering. While his condition is reported to be stable, doctors noted that the head injuries were serious and required immediate medical attention.

Police teams have been formed to trace and arrest the accused, who remain absconding. Senior officers said strict action will be taken against those involved, emphasising that no individual or group has the right to question another person’s citizenship or take the law into their own hands.

The incident has sparked renewed debate over the vulnerability of migrant labourers and the dangers of mob justice driven by suspicion and misinformation. Rights groups have called for stronger safeguards, faster police response mechanisms, and public awareness to prevent such incidents in the future.

Authorities reiterated that identity verification is solely the responsibility of designated government agencies and warned that vigilante actions will attract stringent legal consequences.
