Ishan Kishan’s emphatic return to form in domestic cricket has once again stirred debate around India’s T20I opening combination, with his explosive century in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2025 final arriving at a crucial moment. With the T20 World Cup less than two months away, Kishan’s knock has placed renewed pressure on Shubman Gill and sharpened the selection dilemma facing the Indian team management.
Leading Jharkhand in the SMAT final against Haryana, the left-handed wicketkeeper-batter delivered a blistering 101 off just 49 balls, powering his side to a massive 262/3 and laying the foundation for a title-winning performance. The innings was not just significant for its strike rate and shot-making, but also for its timing. National selectors Pragyan Ojha and RP Singh were present at the ground, ensuring Kishan’s statement performance did not go unnoticed.
Kishan ended the tournament as the leading run-scorer, amassing 517 runs from 10 innings, underlining his consistency across the competition. The SMAT heroics followed another strong domestic showing earlier in the season, including a century in the Duleep Trophy, reinforcing the narrative of a batter who has rediscovered rhythm and confidence.
The resurgence carries extra weight given Kishan’s prolonged absence from the Indian T20I setup. The 27-year-old has not featured in the format since 2023, after being sidelined on disciplinary grounds during Rahul Dravid’s tenure, with Ajit Agarkar leading the selection panel. Speaking after Jharkhand’s triumph, Kishan acknowledged the mental toll of being out of the national side but emphasised perseverance and self-belief.
Rather than frustration dictating his approach, Kishan focused on performance and impact, a mindset that appears to have paid dividends. His latest innings has triggered widespread discussion among fans and experts alike, many of whom are now questioning whether India should reconsider its opening options ahead of the World Cup.
That conversation inevitably places the spotlight on Shubman Gill. While Gill remains a cornerstone of India’s plans across formats and serves as vice-captain, his T20I returns in 2025 have been underwhelming. In the recent series against South Africa, Gill managed just 32 runs across three matches, struggling to provide the explosive starts expected in the shortest format.
Overall this year, Gill has scored 291 runs in 15 T20Is, averaging 24.25 with a strike-rate of 137.26 — respectable numbers, but not dominant by modern T20 standards. With Gill currently nursing a foot injury and likely to miss the Ahmedabad T20I, the door has opened for alternatives like Sanju Samson, while Kishan’s domestic surge strengthens his claim.
As the World Cup countdown accelerates, India’s opening slot has emerged as one of the most hotly contested positions. Alongside names like Samson and Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan has ensured he is firmly back in the conversation — and impossible for selectors to ignore.
