Ravindra Jadeja–Sanju Samson Trade Stalls as Rajasthan Royals Face Fund Crunch and Overseas Quota Hurdle

Ravindra Jadeja–Sanju Samson Trade Stalls as Rajasthan Royals Face Fund Crunch and Overseas Quota Hurdle

The blockbuster Ravindra Jadeja–Sanju Samson trade deal between Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) has reportedly hit a roadblock, with financial constraints and overseas player quota issues delaying its finalization.

According to multiple reports, including inputs from Cricbuzz, both franchises have expressed serious interest in executing the high-profile swap, but the deal is yet to be formally submitted to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for approval.

Overseas Player Quota Blocks Deal

At the core of the delay is Sam Curran’s involvement in the proposed multi-player transaction. The English all-rounder, who was initially discussed as part of the deal structure, poses a challenge to Rajasthan’s squad balance.

Rajasthan Royals’ overseas quota is already full, preventing them from adding Curran without releasing one of their current international players. As of now, RR’s eight overseas members include:

  • Jofra Archer

  • Shimron Hetmyer

  • Wanindu Hasaranga

  • Maheesh Theekshana

  • Fazalhaq Farooqi

  • Kwena Maphaka

  • Nandre Burger

  • Lhuan-dre Pretorius

With this lineup, the Royals currently have no available overseas slot and only Rs 30 lakh remaining in their purse — a figure far too low to accommodate Curran’s Rs 2.4 crore valuation.

A source close to the trade negotiations told All India Story, “The framework of the deal is in place, but the Royals need to create both financial and roster space. Until then, it’s on hold.”

Budget Constraints Add to Trouble

The budget cap presents another major obstacle for Rajasthan. IPL’s financial structure mandates that teams must stay within the salary purse of Rs 100 crore. With just Rs 30 lakh left, the franchise has little flexibility to onboard high-value players like Jadeja or Curran without offloading existing talent.

Insiders suggest that Rajasthan Royals are weighing the option of releasing one or both of their Sri Lankan players, Wanindu Hasaranga (Rs 5.25 crore) and Maheesh Theekshana (Rs 4.40 crore), to free up both money and an overseas slot.

These decisions, however, are expected to take place after the IPL retention deadline on November 15, when all teams must officially declare their list of retained and released players for the upcoming 2026 auction.

Deal Status: ‘Possible But Delayed’

Despite the complications, insiders indicate that the trade is “possible but unlikely before retention day.”

“Both sides have been in deep conversation for weeks,” a person familiar with the talks said. “At this point, it’s hard to imagine either CSK or RR backing out, but the logistics make it difficult to finalize before November 15.”

The proposed trade reportedly involves Ravindra Jadeja moving to Rajasthan Royals, while Sanju Samson and potentially Sam Curran would shift to Chennai Super Kings, balancing leadership and all-rounder capabilities for both teams.

What It Means for CSK and RR

For Rajasthan Royals, bringing in Jadeja would significantly strengthen their middle order and all-rounder depth. His experience, coupled with the leadership of Jos Buttler and Yashasvi Jaiswal, could make RR a more balanced unit ahead of IPL 2026.

However, the move would require releasing key international assets and reshuffling existing roles — a high-risk decision given RR’s reliance on overseas match-winners like Archer and Hetmyer.

For Chennai Super Kings, losing Ravindra Jadeja would mark the end of an era. The star all-rounder has been a central figure in CSK’s success, often serving as the team’s go-to player in crunch situations with both bat and ball.

Jadeja, who joined CSK in 2012, has helped the franchise lift three IPL titles and was instrumental in their 2023 championship run, forming a core leadership unit alongside MS Dhoni.

A senior CSK insider told All India Story, “There’s mutual respect between Jadeja and the management, but both sides understand that team dynamics evolve. This trade could open new possibilities for everyone involved.”

Samson’s potential move to CSK, meanwhile, could fill a leadership vacuum as Dhoni’s retirement looms. The franchise has been quietly exploring captaincy options, and Samson’s experience leading RR makes him a natural fit.

November 15: The Decisive Date

All eyes are now on November 15, the official IPL retention deadline, which will determine whether Rajasthan can clear the financial and roster hurdles necessary to complete the blockbuster trade.

If RR release one or more overseas players, the trade could be revived and submitted to the BCCI’s player transfer committee for approval before the IPL 2026 mini-auction in December.

However, if the Royals fail to free up funds and roster space, the deal could be deferred or scrapped altogether — leaving both Jadeja and Samson to remain with their respective franchises for another season.

The Bigger Picture

The Jadeja–Samson trade talks have already become one of the most closely watched off-season developments in IPL history. The move would represent a rare marquee swap between two captains and core players, potentially reshaping both teams’ strategies for the 2026 edition.

With the retention window closing soon, franchise managers across the league are monitoring the situation closely, aware that the outcome could set a new precedent for high-value, multi-player trades in future IPL seasons.

As things stand, the deal remains “in play but under pressure.” Fans of both CSK and RR will be hoping the next three days bring clarity — and possibly, one of the most dramatic transfers in IPL history.
