India’s ODI captain Shubman Gill endured a forgettable return to domestic cricket as he was dismissed for just 11 runs against Goa in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, triggering a wave of criticism and trolling on social media. The early dismissal has once again put the spotlight on Gill’s prolonged dip in form and revived the narrative around his struggles away from ideal batting conditions.
Gill, turning out for Punjab in his first 50-over domestic appearance in months, was expected to anchor the chase after Goa were bowled out for a modest 211. However, the right-hander failed to make an impact, becoming the second batter to be dismissed in Punjab’s innings. He struck two boundaries before falling in the fifth over, undone by a delivery from Vasuki Koushik.
The dismissal quickly went viral, with a section of fans labelling Gill a “flat track bully” and questioning his ability to handle pressure against even domestic-level bowling attacks. Some critics went as far as to suggest that Gill’s form has dipped so sharply that he is no longer dominating at the club and state level, a harsh assessment for a player who was once seen as the backbone of India’s white-ball future.
Gill’s struggles in 2025 have been well documented. The opener endured a lean year across formats, which culminated in his exclusion from India’s squad for the 2026 T20 World Cup announced in December. In ODIs, Gill has failed to score a half-century in his last seven appearances, while his T20I numbers have also dipped, with just one fifty across the entire calendar year.
The Vijay Hazare Trophy match against Goa marked Gill’s return to competitive 50-over cricket following a neck injury sustained during India’s home series against South Africa. The injury, picked up in a freak incident during the opening Test at Eden Gardens, ruled him out of both the Test and ODI legs of the series. While expectations were high for a strong comeback, the early failure only added to the scrutiny surrounding his form.
Despite Gill’s dismissal, Punjab were never in serious trouble during the chase. The team wrapped up the target comfortably in 35 overs with six wickets in hand. Harnoor Singh played a decisive role with an unbeaten 94 off 90 balls, while Naman Dhir provided solid support with a fluent 68 from 65 deliveries. Their partnership ensured Gill’s failure did not impact the final result.
The contrast between Gill’s outing and performances elsewhere in the tournament only added fuel to online debates. In another Vijay Hazare Trophy fixture, Shreyas Iyer made a strong statement on his return from injury, scoring a blistering 82 off just 53 balls for Mumbai against Himachal Pradesh. Batting at Jaipur’s Jaipuria Vidyalaya Ground, Iyer’s knock laid the foundation for Mumbai’s imposing total of 299 in a match reduced due to dense fog.
For Gill, the Goa innings was another reminder that the road back to peak form will require patience and consistent performances rather than reputation alone. As India’s ODI captain, expectations remain high, and every outing — domestic or international — is being closely watched by fans and critics alike.
While one innings does not define a career, the Vijay Hazare Trophy failure has ensured that Gill’s form, confidence and adaptability remain firmly under the microscope as Indian cricket heads into a crucial phase.
