T20 World Cup 2026: ICC Warns Bangladesh of Replacement If It Refuses to Play in India

The International Cricket Council has taken a firm stand on the participation of Bangladesh in the 2026 T20 World Cup, warning that the team will be replaced if it continues to refuse to travel to India for its scheduled matches. In a decisive move, the International Cricket Council board rejected the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s request to shift venues, underlining that host arrangements cannot be altered at the eleventh hour.

According to sources, the proposal put forward by the Bangladesh Cricket Board to move Bangladesh’s matches out of India was voted down 14–2 at an ICC board meeting. Following the vote, the ICC formally informed the BCB that if Bangladesh does not honour its commitment to play in India, it will be removed from the tournament and replaced by Scotland.

One-day ultimatum to Bangladesh

After the meeting, the ICC asked the BCB to brief the Bangladesh government on the outcome and convey a final decision within one day. The message from the global body was unambiguous: participation in the tournament is conditional on travelling to India as per the agreed schedule.

The 2026 T20 World Cup is set to begin on February 7, with Bangladesh currently scheduled to play three group matches in Kolkata and one in Mumbai. Despite this, the Bangladesh government-backed board has consistently declined to send the team to India, citing security concerns.

Venue change proposal rejected

In an attempt to avoid travelling to India, the BCB proposed that Bangladesh’s matches be moved to Sri Lanka, a co-host of the tournament. The board even suggested a group reshuffle, seeking to move from Group C to Group B in place of Ireland, which would have allowed Bangladesh to play all league games in Sri Lanka.

Group C currently includes West Indies, England, Italy, Nepal, and Bangladesh, while Group B features Sri Lanka, Australia, Oman, and Zimbabwe. The ICC, however, showed little appetite for altering group structures or the tournament schedule so close to the start of the competition.

Officials indicated that changing venues or groups would set a dangerous precedent and undermine the integrity of ICC event planning, especially when host agreements are already in place until 2027.

Scotland on standby as replacement

If Bangladesh withdraws or fails to comply, Scotland cricket team is expected to step in as a replacement in Group C. Scotland did not qualify directly for the 2026 T20 World Cup, having finished behind the Netherlands, Italy, and Jersey in the European qualifiers, but now finds itself in line for a late entry due to the impasse.

The possibility of replacement has added urgency to the situation, with the ICC keen to finalise the tournament lineup well ahead of the opening match.

Political tensions add complexity

The standoff is understood to have roots beyond cricket. Reports suggest the dispute escalated after Indian authorities asked an IPL franchise to release a Bangladeshi player from its squad, a move linked to worsening political relations between India and Bangladesh. Subsequently, the Bangladesh government took a firm position that the national team would not travel to India for World Cup fixtures.

The issue has since snowballed, even spilling over into domestic cricket in Bangladesh, where unrest and player protests disrupted the Bangladesh Premier League. Comments by a senior BCB official regarding potential financial losses if Bangladesh skipped the World Cup further fuelled tensions.

ICC draws a clear line

With the deadline looming and the tournament less than three weeks away, the ICC has made it clear that there will be no further extensions or compromises. The responsibility now lies squarely with the BCB to either confirm participation or step aside.

If Bangladesh does not reverse its stance, the ICC is prepared to enforce its decision and proceed with Scotland as a replacement, ensuring that the tournament goes ahead without further uncertainty.
