A Block Level Officer (BLO) in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas, has alleged that he received violent threats over the Special Summary Revision (SIR) process, triggering fresh political tensions in a region already on edge. The incident has led to the arrest of a Trinamool Congress worker, intensifying accusations and counter-accusations between rival parties.
The controversy erupted after BLO Deepak Mahato reported receiving an abusive and threatening phone call related to the submission of voter enumeration forms. In an audio clip that has since gone viral, a man can be heard issuing chilling threats, saying, “I will vandalise your house. Fix it, otherwise I will slaughter you by night.”
Police arrested Jamirul Islam Mollah, a Trinamool worker alleged to be behind the threatening call. According to investigators, the dispute arose after a 97-year-old voter’s details could not be uploaded during the SIR form submission. The voter’s name had not appeared in the voters’ list since 2002—the last time a similar revision exercise took place—creating confusion during the verification process.
Officials said Jamirul allegedly called Mahato and demanded that the elderly man’s name be added “somehow,” despite procedural issues. When the BLO insisted that proper guidelines must be followed, Jamirul reportedly hurled expletives and issued violent threats.
Mahato first notified the Block Development Officer in writing and then filed a complaint at Nazat Police Station, accusing Jamirul of intimidation and obstructing a government official from performing his duties. Jamirul was arrested on Saturday night and later produced before the Basirhat court.
Local residents claim Jamirul is closely associated with the area’s Trinamool panchayat pradhan and works as a booth-level agent for the ruling party. The leaked audio recording has sparked public outrage and is circulating widely on social media.
Mahato alleged that Jamirul repeatedly pressured him to bypass rules and threatened to destroy his home or set it on fire if he failed to include the 97-year-old’s name in the electoral roll.
The BJP has seized on the incident, accusing the Trinamool Congress of intimidating booth-level officers amid concerns that the SIR process could weaken the ruling party’s position. BJP leaders rushed to the area soon after the arrest, claiming the threats were part of a larger attempt to manipulate voter rolls.
The Trinamool Congress has not issued an official statement in response to the allegations, but police sources say the investigation will continue to determine whether additional individuals were involved in pressuring officials.
With Sandeshkhali already grappling with political volatility, the incident has further fueled tensions, raising concerns about the safety of election officials ahead of the next electoral cycle.
