The Assam government has initiated discussions with filmmaker Aditya Dhar to direct a grand biographical film on Lachit Borphukan, one of the most celebrated military heroes in Indian history.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma confirmed that he has personally approached the director following the success of the Dhurandhar franchise, expressing hope that a large-scale Hindi film could introduce the legendary Ahom commander to audiences across the world.
During a Facebook Live session, Himanta Biswa Sarma revealed that discussions with Aditya Dhar are currently underway.
Praising the filmmaker's work, the Chief Minister said Dhar is among the leading directors of his generation and believes he is well-suited to bring Lachit Borphukan's inspiring story to the big screen.
According to Sarma, Dhar is expected to visit Assam in August to continue discussions and explore the creative vision for the proposed project.
The Chief Minister said the objective of the proposed film is to make the story of Lachit Borphukan known to a global audience.
He believes that a high-quality Hindi-language biopic can help showcase Assam's rich history and honour one of India's greatest military leaders.
However, Sarma clarified that the project will move forward even if Aditya Dhar is unable to direct it.
He said the government remains committed to producing the film and will approach other filmmakers if necessary.
The proposed biopic is part of the Assam government's 2026-27 Budget announcement aimed at promoting the state's historical icons through cinema.
