Bengaluru Robbery: Gang Posing as Police Loots Businessman of ₹20 Lakh and Gold

A shocking robbery in Bengaluru has raised serious concerns about public safety after a gang posing as police officers allegedly looted a real estate developer at his residence. The accused threatened the elderly couple at gunpoint and fled with cash and jewellery worth lakhs.

Police have launched a manhunt and formed special teams to track down the suspects.

Crime Took Place at BEL Layout Residence

The incident occurred on February 16 at the residence of 53-year-old real estate developer Hombalegowda in Bengaluru’s BEL Layout area.

According to police sources, the businessman was at home with his wife Mangalamma and their grandchildren when the accused entered the house.

Two of the four suspects were dressed in police uniforms and claimed they were from the Yelahanka police station. Carrying a bag and diary similar to those used by law enforcement personnel, they appeared convincing and gained entry without raising suspicion.

Threatened Couple with Weapons

Once inside, the gang allegedly turned violent.

Investigators said the suspects:

  • Threatened the couple using a gun and a knife

  • Restrained them using black tape

  • Ransacked the bedroom and valuables storage areas

The accused stole:

  • ₹20 lakh in cash

  • Approximately 500 grams of gold jewellery

  • Mobile phones belonging to the couple

While two men carried out the robbery inside the house, the remaining two stayed outside to keep watch.

Escape and Immediate Police Response

After looting the valuables, the gang fled the scene. The victims later alerted the police, who registered a case and began an investigation.

Authorities have formed two special teams to trace the suspects.

Police are currently:

  • Examining CCTV footage from surrounding areas

  • Tracking possible vehicle movements

  • Investigating the use of fake police uniforms and equipment

  • Checking for links to similar impersonation crimes

Rising Concern Over Impersonation Crimes

The incident highlights a growing concern over criminals impersonating law enforcement officials to gain trust and access to homes.

Police have urged residents to:

  • Verify identity cards before allowing entry

  • Confirm police visits through local police stations

  • Avoid sharing information with unknown visitors

Investigation Ongoing

Authorities believe the crime was carefully planned and executed with reconnaissance of the area.

Efforts are underway to identify and arrest the accused and recover the stolen valuables.

Residents have been asked to remain alert as police intensify search operations across the city.
