Jammu and Kashmir Reopens 14 Tourist Spots Closed After Pahalgam Attack

Jammu and Kashmir Reopens 14 Tourist Spots Closed After Pahalgam Attack

Tourism in Jammu and Kashmir is set to regain momentum as authorities reopen 14 prominent tourist destinations that were closed following last year’s deadly attack in Pahalgam. The move comes after a comprehensive security review and signals improving conditions for visitors.

The decision allows both domestic and international tourists to return to some of the region’s most iconic destinations.

Reopening Ordered After Improved Security Assessment

Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha directed the immediate reopening of key tourist sites across the Union Territory, citing improved security conditions.

Authorities had closed nearly 50 tourist locations after the April 2025 terror attack at Baisaran meadow in Pahalgam, which killed 26 people, most of them tourists. The closures were implemented as a precaution while security protocols were reassessed.

Officials confirmed that the reopening follows detailed security evaluations and consultations.

Some Destinations Still Await Snow Clearance

Authorities stated that a few locations will reopen once weather conditions improve:

  • Athwatoo

  • Bangus Valley

  • Ramkund (Ramban)

These sites remain inaccessible due to snow.

Tulip Garden and Yousmarg Among Top Attractions

The Indira Gandhi Memorial Tulip Garden in Srinagar, Asia’s largest, is a major spring attraction featuring millions of tulips set against the Zabarwan hills with views of Dal Lake.

Yousmarg, located in Budgam district, is known for its serene alpine meadows and pine forests, while Doodhpathri — often called the “Valley of Milk” — attracts visitors with its lush pastures and clear streams.

Phased Reopening of Tourism in the Region

With the latest announcement, 42 tourist destinations in Jammu and Kashmir have reopened in phases.

Earlier reopenings included:

  • 16 locations reopened in June

  • 12 additional sites reopened in September

The phased approach aims to balance tourism revival with security considerations.

Tourism Recovery Gains Momentum

The Pahalgam attack initially caused a sharp decline in tourist arrivals. However, officials report that improved security, enhanced connectivity, and successful religious tourism events have helped restore visitor confidence.

Tourist arrivals in Kashmir have reached record levels over the past three years, reflecting renewed interest in the region.

Authorities believe the reopening will further boost tourism, support local livelihoods, and reinforce the region’s position as one of India’s premier travel destinations.
