Dense fog is expected to make a strong comeback across large parts of north India on Saturday, January 10, following unexpected rainfall that led to a sharp drop in temperatures across several regions. Weather conditions are likely to remain challenging during early morning and late-night hours, with reduced visibility affecting road, rail, and air travel.
According to weather assessments, thick fog is likely to prevail over Punjab and the northern districts of Rajasthan, where atmospheric conditions are favourable for dense fog formation. Similar conditions may extend into parts of Haryana, with visibility expected to dip significantly during pre-dawn and post-sunset periods.
Foggy conditions may also impact Delhi-NCR, along with central Uttar Pradesh and northern Madhya Pradesh. However, weather experts suggest that while fog will persist, its intensity may be marginally lower than what was witnessed earlier this week. Still, commuters are advised to remain cautious as even moderate fog can disrupt traffic flow and increase accident risks.
Cold conditions are expected to continue across much of north India despite the absence of widespread rainfall. Cold and dry north-westerly winds are forecast to dominate the region, keeping daytime temperatures below normal levels. Weather analysts note that the chill will not be limited to early mornings alone, as several areas may experience colder-than-usual conditions even during daytime hours.
There is, however, some relief anticipated over the Indo-Gangetic plains. Regions stretching from eastern Uttar Pradesh to Bihar, Jharkhand and parts of Chhattisgarh could witness a slight improvement in daytime temperatures. While mornings may remain cold and foggy, afternoon temperatures in these areas are likely to rise marginally, easing harsh winter conditions.
In contrast, southern India is preparing for a shift in weather patterns. A developing weather system over the south is expected to bring heavy rainfall over coastal Tamil Nadu. Light and scattered rainfall may also occur over interior Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and south interior Karnataka, potentially affecting local travel and agricultural activities.
Parts of Maharashtra are likely to see increased cloud cover, particularly over southern districts such as Pune, Sangli, Satara, Kolhapur, Solapur, Jalna, Beed and Hingoli. While cloudy skies are expected, widespread rainfall over Maharashtra remains unlikely at this stage.
Cloud bands may also appear over eastern and central India, covering cities such as Patna, Ranchi, Jamshedpur, Raipur, Jabalpur, Rewa, Singrauli and Varanasi. However, these cloud formations are not expected to trigger significant weather events and are likely to have minimal impact on temperatures or precipitation.
Overall, January 10 is expected to present a mixed weather scenario across the country. Dense fog and cold winds will dominate northern regions, while rainfall activity will remain largely confined to southern coastal areas. Authorities have advised commuters in fog-prone regions to exercise caution, while residents and farmers in southern states are urged to stay alert to rain-related disruptions.
