India will look to clinch the five-match T20I series against South Africa when the two sides face off in the fourth T20I at the Ekana Stadium in Lucknow on December 17. Leading the series 2–1, the hosts have an opportunity to secure the rubber with one match still to play, but key questions around batting form continue to dominate discussions.
India staged a strong comeback in the third T20I after a disappointing outing in the second match. The bowlers delivered a disciplined performance to dismiss South Africa for just 117, laying the foundation for a comfortable chase. Opener Abhishek Sharma once again set the tone with an aggressive start as India wrapped up the target in 15.5 overs, underlining the team’s depth despite notable absences.
However, concerns remain around the form of captain Suryakumar Yadav and vice-captain Shubman Gill, both of whom failed to make significant contributions in the previous game. With only seven T20Is left before the T20 World Cup 2026 on home soil, scrutiny around their consistency has intensified. In the third T20I, Suryakumar managed 12 while Gill fell for 28, extending their lean patch at a crucial phase of preparation.
South Africa, meanwhile, endured a forgettable outing in the third match, with neither bat nor ball clicking for the Aiden Markram-led side. The visitors will be keen to treat the loss as an aberration and bounce back strongly, knowing that a defeat in Lucknow would end their hopes of levelling the series.
Gill’s continued struggles have reopened the debate over his role at the top of the order. Since his recall during the Asia Cup 2025, replacing Sanju Samson, Gill has failed to register a single fifty-plus score in 15 T20I innings. Samson, who had enjoyed success as an opener, has since struggled for regular opportunities amid frequent batting reshuffles.
With the World Cup fast approaching, the team management is unlikely to make drastic changes immediately. However, pressure is mounting, and another failure in Lucknow could amplify calls for a rethink.
The fourth T20I will begin at 7:00 PM IST at the Ekana Stadium, Lucknow. The venue has hosted six T20Is, with teams batting first winning five of those matches. The average first-innings score is 160, and the pitch traditionally offers assistance to spinners. Dew in the second innings could influence toss decisions, with captains potentially opting to bowl first.
India will once again be without Jasprit Bumrah, who returned home due to a family matter, and Axar Patel, who has been ruled out of the entire series due to illness. Despite these setbacks, India’s bench strength has allowed them to remain competitive.
South Africa have no injury concerns. David Miller is expected to return after missing the third T20I, while the inclusion of Keshav Maharaj could strengthen their spin options on a surface likely to aid slow bowlers.
India: Abhishek Sharma, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (c), Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya, Shivam Dube, Jitesh Sharma (wk), Harshit Rana, Arshdeep Singh, Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy
South Africa: Reeza Hendricks, Quinton de Kock (wk), Aiden Markram (c), Dewald Brevis, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Marco Jansen, Corbin Bosch, Keshav Maharaj, Lungi Ngidi, Ottneil Baartman
India enter the contest as favourites, given their recent dominance and home conditions. South Africa are expected to respond strongly, but if India’s bowlers maintain their form, the hosts are well placed to seal the series in Lucknow.
