Jair Bolsonaro Taken Into Federal Police Custody Amid Coup Appeal and House Arrest Violations

Former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro was taken into federal police custody on Saturday, ending more than three months of strict house arrest as he continues to appeal a Supreme Court conviction linked to his alleged efforts to undermine Brazil’s democracy.

Bolsonaro’s lawyer, Celso Vilardi, confirmed the detention but did not disclose the reasons. However, a source familiar with the matter said it was a preventative measure tied to compliance requirements of his house arrest.

Federal police in Brasília confirmed that Bolsonaro was undergoing intake procedures on Saturday morning.

Conviction for Plotting a Coup

In September, Brazil’s Supreme Court sentenced the former right-wing leader to 27 years and three months in prison for orchestrating a plot to remain in power after losing the 2022 presidential election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Investigators identified Bolsonaro as the chief architect and beneficiary of an alleged plan to block Lula’s inauguration in 2023. Despite the sentence, Bolsonaro remains free pending completion of the appeals process, meaning a final arrest order for this case has not yet been issued.

House Arrest Violations and U.S. Angle

Bolsonaro had spent more than 100 days under house arrest for violating precautionary measures in a separate case involving allegations that he sought U.S. interference to disrupt criminal proceedings against him.

During this period, he was banned from using social media but continued receiving political visitors. His legal team is expected to request that any future prison term be served under house arrest, citing longstanding health complications related to a 2018 stabbing attack during his presidential campaign.

International Reactions

Former U.S. President Donald Trump, a close ally of Bolsonaro, has criticised the cases against him as a political attack. Trump previously imposed sanctions on Brazilian Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who oversees the proceedings, and placed tariffs on several Brazilian imports — some of which he has begun rolling back.

Political Future Already Sealed

Bolsonaro had earlier been barred from public office until 2030 after Brazil’s electoral court found him guilty of abusing presidential powers during the 2022 campaign.

With Saturday’s custody order, Bolsonaro now faces escalating legal pressure as Brazil’s institutions tighten accountability over attacks on democratic processes.
