Jana Nayagan producer Venkat K Narayana has addressed the ongoing certification controversy surrounding the Vijay-starrer for the first time, outlining the sequence of events that led to legal intervention and delayed the film’s planned release.
In a video statement released amid mounting speculation, Narayana clarified that Jana Nayagan was submitted to the Central Board of Film Certification on December 18, 2025. The film was viewed by the examining committee, which subsequently communicated on December 22 that it would be granted a UA 16+ certificate, subject to minor modifications. According to the producer, the team complied with all suggested changes and promptly resubmitted the revised version.
However, the situation took an unexpected turn just days before the scheduled release. Narayana revealed that on January 5, 2026, the makers were informed that the film had been referred to the revising committee following a single complaint. He stated that the lack of clarity regarding the complainant, combined with time constraints and an impending release date, left the production team with no practical option but to seek judicial intervention.
“With no opportunity to approach the revising committee within the available timeframe, and without transparency regarding the complaint, we approached the Honourable High Court,” Narayana said, adding that the decision was made to protect the film’s release prospects rather than escalate conflict.
The producer also issued an apology to fans, distributors and exhibitors who had invested emotionally and financially in the film’s Pongal release. He stressed that the delay was beyond the control of the production house and reiterated that the team had acted in good faith throughout the certification process.
A central theme of Narayana’s statement was his defence of Vijay, whom he described as deserving a respectful and dignified farewell after decades of contribution to Tamil cinema. Without framing the issue as a confrontation, he emphasised that Jana Nayagan holds emotional significance as Vijay’s final film before his full-time political transition, and that the actor has earned the right to conclude his cinematic journey on his own terms.
Meanwhile, the legal proceedings have added another layer of uncertainty. On January 9, the Madras High Court placed a temporary stay on an earlier order directing the CBFC to issue a U/A certificate, effectively putting the film’s release on hold until further hearings. The matter is now scheduled for detailed consideration, with the court examining both procedural fairness and the timing of the certification process.
As the controversy continues, Jana Nayagan has become part of a broader conversation around transparency in film certification, last-minute interventions, and the balance between regulatory oversight and creative freedom. For now, the makers maintain that they followed due process and remain hopeful of a resolution that allows the film to reach audiences without further delay.
