FC Barcelona goalkeeper Joan Garcia endured one of the most hostile receptions of his career on Saturday night but responded with a commanding performance to guide FC Barcelona to a dramatic 2–0 derby victory over RCD Espanyol at the RCDE Stadium.
Garcia’s first competitive return to his former club was always destined to be emotionally charged. The 24-year-old goalkeeper left Espanyol last summer in a €25 million transfer to Barcelona, becoming the first player in more than three decades to cross the fierce city divide directly. From the moment he appeared for the warm-up, Espanyol supporters made their feelings unmistakably clear.
Relentless boos, whistles and chants followed Garcia throughout the evening. Fans unfurled provocative banners, displayed rat-themed posters in Barcelona colours and waved mock banknotes bearing his image, branding him a traitor. Fake notes reading “Judas Garcia” circulated in the stands, underscoring the bitterness surrounding his departure.
Despite the intimidating atmosphere, Garcia showed remarkable composure. Espanyol dominated long phases of the match, creating multiple scoring opportunities and testing Barcelona’s defensive structure. Yet time and again, Garcia stood tall, refusing to be rattled by the noise or the pressure.
One defining moment came in the 20th minute when Garcia aggressively pushed aside his own defender, Gerard Martin, to make a crucial intervention. Just before half-time, he produced a spectacular point-blank save from a Pere Milla header, a stop that drew gasps from the home crowd and silenced the stadium momentarily.
Espanyol continued to press after the interval, but Garcia remained unbreakable, finishing the contest with a season-high six saves. His resilience proved decisive, allowing Barcelona to survive long enough to strike late and turn the derby on its head.
Substitutions changed the momentum in Barcelona’s favour. Midfielder Fermín López provided the creative spark, setting up both goals. Dani Olmo broke the deadlock in the 86th minute with a composed finish, before Robert Lewandowski sealed the win four minutes later.
Barcelona head coach Hansi Flick singled out Garcia for special praise after the match, acknowledging the goalkeeper’s pivotal role in the victory. Flick admitted his side were far from their best but credited Garcia’s performance as the foundation of the result, describing him as one of the finest goalkeepers in world football.
For Espanyol, the defeat compounded frustration on a night they largely controlled. For Garcia, it was a moment of personal vindication. On an evening designed to intimidate and unsettle him, the Barcelona goalkeeper delivered a statement performance, reinforcing his growing importance to LaLiga’s leaders and announcing himself as a decisive figure in the title race.
