Kiara Advani Joins 8-Hour Work Debate, Emphasises Mental Well-Being After Motherhood

Actor Kiara Advani has joined the ongoing debate around working hours and mental well-being in Bollywood, emphasising the need for balance, dignity and respect—especially after embracing motherhood earlier this year.

Kiara’s comments come amid renewed industry-wide discussion on eight-hour workdays, a conversation that gained traction after Deepika Padukone reportedly stepped away from two major projects over concerns related to long and demanding work schedules.

‘BURNOUT HELPS NO ONE’: KIARA ADVANI

In an interview with Vogue, the 34-year-old actor, who welcomed her daughter Saraayah in July, said that excessive work hours are counterproductive in any profession.

“Burnout helps no one in any industry,” Kiara said, adding that three principles now guide her professional life as much as her personal one: dignity, balance and respect.

She noted that these values apply not only to film sets but also to the people she works with in her everyday life, underscoring the importance of healthy, humane work environments.

SHIFT IN PRIORITIES AFTER MOTHERHOOD

Kiara Advani also spoke about how motherhood has reshaped her outlook on career choices. The actor revealed that she is currently exploring new scripts, including a biopic, but said her selection process has evolved.

According to Kiara, roles are no longer about genre or scale. “It’s about the soul of the story,” she said, explaining that meaning and emotional depth now matter more than ever.

She added that mental health—both her own and that of those around her—has become a central priority after becoming a mother.

DEEPIKA PADUKONE’S STAND FUELS INDUSTRY DEBATE

The discussion around working hours intensified after Deepika Padukone, in a separate interview with Harper’s Bazaar India, spoke candidly about the film industry’s culture of overwork.

“We’ve normalised overworking. We mistake burnout for commitment,” Deepika said, stressing that eight hours of work a day is sufficient for both the body and mind. She also highlighted the importance of maternity and paternity policies, and normalising child-friendly workspaces.

Deepika’s remarks, coupled with Kiara Advani’s perspective, have added momentum to calls for more sustainable working practices in Bollywood, particularly for new mothers and working parents.

A WIDER CONVERSATION IN BOLLYWOOD

As more leading actors speak openly about mental health and work-life balance, the debate signals a possible shift in how the Hindi film industry approaches productivity, professionalism and care for its workforce.

For Kiara Advani, the message is clear: creativity thrives not on exhaustion, but on balance.
