A dramatic emergency landing involving a NASA research aircraft unfolded at a Texas airport after a mechanical failure prevented the plane’s landing gear from deploying, forcing the crew to execute a controlled belly landing. The incident, which was captured on video and widely shared online, showed flames and thick smoke erupting beneath the aircraft as it skidded along the runway before coming to a halt.
The aircraft involved was a NASA WB-57, a high-altitude research jet used for scientific and atmospheric studies. The emergency landing took place at Ellington Airport, located southeast of Houston. Officials confirmed that both crew members onboard were safe and no injuries were reported.
Video footage of the incident shows the aircraft descending steadily before making contact with the runway without its wheels extended. Upon impact, the plane jolted sharply and began sliding on its underside, sending sparks, flames, and white smoke billowing from beneath the fuselage. As the aircraft continued to skid, its wings appeared to bounce slightly while emergency responders rushed toward the runway.
The aircraft gradually lost speed before stopping completely, with smoke surrounding the lower section of the jet. Subsequent visuals showed the cockpit hatch open and emergency vehicles positioned around the aircraft as fire crews worked to secure the area and prevent further hazards.
NASA later confirmed that the landing was necessitated by a mechanical issue related to the landing gear system. Officials said an investigation has been launched to determine the exact cause of the malfunction and to assess any structural damage to the aircraft. The space agency emphasised that safety protocols were followed and credited the flight crew for executing a controlled landing under challenging conditions.
The WB-57 is a specialised high-altitude research aircraft known for its long, narrow fuselage and distinctive design. Capable of flying for more than six hours at altitudes exceeding 63,000 feet, the twin-seat jet has been a key part of NASA’s research fleet for decades. It has been used extensively for atmospheric science, Earth observation, and technology testing missions.
The aircraft has been in service since the 1970s and remains one of the few platforms capable of sustained operations at near-space altitudes. Its continued use highlights the importance of specialised aviation assets in advancing scientific research, even as ageing aircraft require rigorous maintenance and monitoring.
Aviation experts noted that belly landings, while rare, are a known emergency procedure when landing gear fails to deploy. Such landings require precise handling, careful speed control, and rapid coordination with ground emergency teams to minimise risk. The absence of injuries in this case underscores the effectiveness of emergency response protocols and pilot training.
Airport operations were temporarily disrupted following the incident as emergency crews secured the runway and inspected the area for debris. Normal operations were expected to resume after safety checks were completed.
