The history of the Nobel Prize dates back to Alfred Nobel, the Swedish inventor, engineer and entrepreneur known for inventing dynamite. In his will, signed in 1895, Nobel directed that much of his fortune should be used to recognise individuals who had made the greatest benefit to humankind.
