PM Modi Launches ₹5,650 Crore Development Projects in Tamil Nadu, Boosts Rail, Gas and Road Connectivity

Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled and inaugurated multiple development projects worth around ₹5,650 crore in Tamil Nadu, focusing on improving railway connectivity, expanding clean energy infrastructure, strengthening highways and upgrading rural roads across the state. The initiatives aim to improve connectivity, boost industrial growth and generate employment opportunities for thousands of people.

The Prime Minister launched the projects during an event in Tiruchirappalli, commonly known as Trichy, where he highlighted the importance of infrastructure development for the long-term growth of Tamil Nadu. During the ceremony, Modi appeared in traditional attire and emphasised that these projects would strengthen transportation networks, improve energy access and support economic development.

A major highlight of the event was the launch of several new train services aimed at improving rail connectivity between Tamil Nadu and other regions of India. The Prime Minister flagged off the Nagercoil–Charlapalli Amrit Bharat Express and the Podanur–Dhanbad Amrit Bharat Express, expanding connectivity to states including Telangana and eastern India.

In addition, two express train services were introduced — the Rameswaram–Mangaluru Express and the Tirunelveli–Mangaluru Express — along with a new rail service connecting Mayiladuthurai, Thiruvarur, and Karaikkudi. These services are expected to strengthen travel and trade connections between Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states such as Karnataka and Kerala.

The Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for a major City Gas Distribution project by Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited in the Nilgiris district and Erode district. The project involves an investment of more than ₹3,680 crore and aims to provide piped natural gas (PNG) connections to more than 8.8 lakh households, supply gas to over 200 commercial establishments, and establish 201 CNG stations.

Another important project dedicated to the nation was the Indian Oil Corporation Lube Plant at Manali, Chennai, built at a cost of ₹1,490 crore. The facility has a production capacity of 672 thousand metric tonnes per year and is expected to strengthen India’s lubricants manufacturing sector while reducing dependence on imports.

The Prime Minister also inaugurated 89 rural roads covering around 370 kilometres under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana. These roads are expected to improve connectivity for villages, allowing easier access to schools, healthcare facilities and markets for farmers and local residents.

Another major infrastructure initiative announced during the event was the foundation stone for a greenfield bypass near Gangaikonda Cholapuram Temple on National Highway 81. The bypass aims to improve traffic movement and enhance safety for pilgrims visiting the historic temple site, which is recognised as a **UNESCO World Heritage location.

The Prime Minister stated that such infrastructure investments are part of the broader vision of building a developed Tamil Nadu that contributes to a developed India. According to him, improved infrastructure, modern energy systems and better transportation networks will accelerate industrial growth, increase tourism and create significant employment opportunities across the state.

With multiple rail, energy and road projects now underway, the development push is expected to strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position as one of India’s major economic and industrial hubs.
