Sarfaraz Khan Smashes Fastest Fifty in Vijay Hazare Trophy, Takes Abhishek Sharma Apart

India and Mumbai batter Sarfaraz Khan rewrote the Vijay Hazare Trophy record books with a breathtaking display of power-hitting, smashing the fastest half-century in the tournament’s history. Sarfaraz reached the landmark in just 15 balls, surpassing the previous record of 16 balls set by Atit Sheth during the 2020–21 season.

The historic knock came during Mumbai’s league-stage fixture, where Sarfaraz walked in after the dismissal of his brother Musheer Khan, with Mumbai placed at 57 for 1 in the ninth over. From the moment he took guard, Sarfaraz showed clear intent, launching an immediate assault on the bowling attack.

In a statement over that set the tone for his innings, Sarfaraz took on Abhishek Sharma, hammering 30 runs in a single over. The barrage of clean strikes left the bowler and fielding side stunned, as Sarfaraz raced to his half-century in just 15 deliveries, setting a new benchmark in the history of the Vijay Hazare Trophy.

The right-hander eventually fell for a scintillating 62 off just 20 balls, an innings studded with seven fours and five towering sixes. His strike rate during the knock crossed 300, underlining the dominance and control with which he dismantled the opposition bowling.

Sarfaraz’s explosive effort was supported by Mumbai captain Shreyas Iyer, who played a fluent innings of 45 off 34 balls, striking four boundaries and two sixes. Together, their attacking intent briefly tilted the momentum firmly in Mumbai’s favour.

The record-breaking knock added to Sarfaraz Khan’s sensational run in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy. In five innings so far, he has accumulated 303 runs at an outstanding average of 75.75 and a strike rate close to 191, including one century and two half-centuries. Earlier in the tournament, Sarfaraz had demolished Goa with a remarkable 157 off 75 balls, featuring nine fours and 14 sixes, helping Mumbai post a mammoth total of 444 for 8.

His form has not been limited to the 50-over format. In the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Sarfaraz scored 329 runs in seven matches, including a century, at a staggering strike rate above 200, further cementing his reputation as one of the most destructive batters in domestic cricket.

Despite the batting heroics, Mumbai endured a dramatic collapse in the match. Chasing 217, they were bowled out for 215 in just 26.2 overs, losing the last five wickets for only 14 runs. Bowlers Gurnoor Brar and Mayank Markande led the charge, claiming four wickets each to seal a one-run victory for the opposition.

While the narrow defeat was a setback, Sarfaraz Khan’s record-breaking innings remains one of the standout moments of the Vijay Hazare Trophy this season, reinforcing his status as a prolific run-scorer and a relentless match-winner in domestic cricket.
