Sharman Joshi Reacts to 3 Idiots 2 Buzz, Says He’s Hopeful but Uninformed

Speculation around a sequel to 3 Idiots has resurfaced once again, nearly 15 years after the cult classic first released, prompting actor Sharman Joshi to share his reaction to the renewed buzz.

Speaking to Hindustan Times, Sharman expressed cautious optimism about 3 Idiots 2, while clarifying that no official communication has reached him so far. “I truly hope it happens, but I haven’t been informed yet,” he said. The actor noted that rumours of a sequel have surfaced multiple times in the past, only to fizzle out later. “Earlier, similar reports turned out to be for an advertisement campaign. Let’s see, hopefully this time it’s real,” he added.

Asked whether the sequel would continue the story from where the original ended, Sharman said he had no insight into the narrative direction. He emphasised that if a sequel does take shape, it would be handled only by the core creative team. “Only Raju sir, Abhijat sir and Aamir would be working on it if there is genuine potential,” he said, referring to director Rajkumar Hirani, writer Abhijat Joshi, and actor Aamir Khan.

Sharman also looked back fondly on his journey with 3 Idiots, recalling an anecdote from the time he was preparing physically for another project. He shared that Hirani had jokingly told him to stop gym workouts for the role. Reflecting on the film’s lasting impact, the actor said the project still brings a smile to his face, describing it as a fairytale-like experience from start to finish.

The actor credited his earlier film Style for catching Hirani’s attention, eventually leading to his casting in 3 Idiots. According to Sharman, the director had remembered him from that performance long before the iconic campus drama took shape.

Meanwhile, a report by Pinkvilla claims that Hirani has finalised the script for 3 Idiots 2, with the film expected to go on floors in 2026. The sequel is reportedly set to reunite the original cast, including Kareena Kapoor Khan and R Madhavan. The project is said to have moved forward after Hirani’s planned Dadasaheb Phalke biopic was put on hold.
