Simu Liu, Melissa Barrera Say They’re Open to Working in Bollywood

Actors Simu Liu and Melissa Barrera have shared their enthusiasm for working in Indian cinema, revealing that they would be open to exploring Bollywood opportunities if the right project comes along. The duo, who star together in the espionage thriller The Copenhagen Test, spoke candidly about representation, identity and their hopes for a more inclusive global entertainment landscape.

Speaking during an exclusive interaction, Liu reflected on the importance of visibility and representation, especially for performers from immigrant and marginalised backgrounds. He noted that seeing oneself represented authentically on screen can be deeply validating, adding that such portrayals often carry meaning beyond entertainment, even when they are not overtly political.

Liu acknowledged that actors from underrepresented communities often carry expectations that go beyond their craft, but said that the ripple effect of visibility can be quietly transformative. He also spoke about the contrast between being raised to avoid confrontation and later realising the value of speaking up in public spaces.

Barrera echoed similar sentiments, stressing the importance of breaking silence around uncomfortable topics. She pointed out that fear often discourages people from voicing their views, but speaking out can empower others to do the same. According to her, meaningful change often begins with conversation, no matter how small.

While much of the discussion centred on serious themes, the interaction also featured lighter moments. When asked about hypothetical spy scenarios, both actors joked about spying on each other, adding a playful note that mirrored the tone of their on-screen chemistry.

The conversation ended with an unexpected but enthusiastic turn towards Indian cinema. When invited to visit India, Liu readily expressed his interest in making a Bollywood film, even joking about embracing the song-and-dance aspect of Hindi cinema. Barrera was equally receptive, sharing his excitement about the possibility.

The Copenhagen Test, which explores themes of surveillance, suspicion and identity through a global espionage lens, is currently streaming in India on Jio Hotstar. The series consists of eight episodes.
