SpiceJet Signs MoU for 10 Aircraft, Plans Major Capacity Expansion

SpiceJet has signed a Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) for the induction of 10 aircraft, marking a significant step in the airline’s ongoing recovery and expansion strategy. The move signals renewed momentum as the carrier works to rebuild capacity and strengthen its network.

An MoU is a preliminary agreement that outlines the intent between parties before final contracts are executed. This development comes shortly after SpiceJet’s board approved a calibrated fleet ramp-up plan that aims to expand the fleet to 60 aircraft. The expansion will be achieved through a mix of wet and damp leases along with the phased return of previously grounded aircraft.

Capacity Recovery Gains Pace

SpiceJet’s operational turnaround has gathered pace in recent months. During the last quarter, the airline doubled its capacity, reflecting improving demand and operational stability.

Available Seat Kilometres (ASKMs) — an industry metric used to measure passenger carrying capacity — rose from approximately 55 crore to 105 crore. ASKMs represent the total number of seats available multiplied by the distance flown and provide a clear picture of the capacity offered by an airline.

Building on this recovery, the airline now aims to more than double its capacity over the coming months. It is targeting approximately 220 crore ASKMs by Winter 2026 and plans to operate more than 300 daily flights across its network.

Strategy Focused on Growth and Stability

According to company leadership, the rapid capacity increase reflects improving passenger demand and growing confidence in the airline’s turnaround plan.

The airline is focusing on restoring operational strength, expanding connectivity and improving reliability while maintaining a disciplined approach to growth. The induction of additional aircraft and the return of grounded planes are expected to support network expansion and enhance schedule efficiency.

Positive Outlook for Operations

SpiceJet’s expansion plan aligns with the broader recovery trend in India’s aviation sector, where travel demand continues to rise. Increased fleet strength will allow the airline to serve more routes, improve frequency and enhance passenger convenience.

The latest MoU represents another step toward long-term stability and operational resilience as the airline works to regain market momentum and strengthen its position in India’s competitive aviation market.
