Thailand-Cambodia Conflict Escalates; Trump Says He Will Call to Halt Renewed Fighting

Border tensions between Thailand and Cambodia escalated for a third consecutive day on Wednesday, prompting US President Donald Trump to announce he would intervene with a phone call to halt the renewed fighting. Trump, who mediated a ceasefire between the two neighbours in July after intense clashes that killed at least 48 people, said he would again attempt to stop the conflict.

The violence has intensified despite contrasting positions from both governments. Thailand’s foreign minister ruled out the possibility of negotiations, saying the environment was “not conducive to third-party mediation.” Cambodia, however, said it was ready to resume talks at any time.

Trump, speaking at a rally in Pennsylvania, claimed credit for halting several global conflicts and added that he would “make a phone call” to stop the Thailand-Cambodia fighting.

Tensions reignited

The conflict flared up after Thailand suspended de-escalation measures agreed during an October summit attended by Trump. The decision followed a landmine blast that severely injured a Thai soldier. Bangkok accused Cambodia of laying new mines, an allegation Cambodia denies.

Both nations say they have evacuated hundreds of thousands from the border region.

  • Cambodia reported nine civilian deaths and 20 injuries since Monday.

  • Thailand said four soldiers were killed and 68 injured.

A senior Thai general said the military’s objective was to “cripple Cambodia’s military capability,” while Cambodia accused Thailand of bombarding civilian areas — charges Thailand rejects.

With no immediate sign of de-escalation and civilian casualties rising, the region is bracing for further instability unless diplomatic efforts resume.
