The Kerala Story 2 Gets U/A Certificate Amid Controversy, Makers Welcome CBFC Decision

The upcoming film The Kerala Story 2 has received a U/A certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), allowing viewers aged 14 and above to watch the film in theatres. The certification comes amid intense public debate and polarized reactions to the film’s trailer.

Director Kamakhya Narayan Singh confirmed the development and expressed gratitude for the timely decision, stating that the certification will enable younger audiences and families to watch the film.

Makers Thank Certification Board

Producer Vipul Amrutlal Shah welcomed the CBFC’s decision and described it as a reflection of trust in the film’s intent.

He emphasised that the certification allows the film to reach a broader audience, including families and young viewers, and said the project aims to create awareness and encourage informed choices among youth.

According to the filmmakers, the U/A rating ensures accessibility while maintaining content oversight through recommended cuts suggested by the board.

Political Criticism and Public Debate

The certification arrives amid criticism from Pinarayi Vijayan, the Chief Minister of Kerala, who has described the film as harmful to social harmony. He expressed concern that such films could undermine the state’s long-standing tradition of religious coexistence.

Vijayan also criticised the narrative portrayal in the film, arguing that it risks misrepresenting interfaith relationships and contributing to social divisions. His remarks have intensified the political and cultural debate surrounding the film.

Trailer Sparks Polarised Reactions

The trailer, released earlier this week, has triggered strong responses online and across political circles. While supporters argue that the film highlights serious social concerns, critics have accused it of promoting propaganda and reinforcing communal tensions.

The film reportedly depicts young women whose lives take a dark turn after entering relationships that lead to coercion, abuse, and forced religious conversion — themes that have become central to the controversy.

Cast, Background and Release Details

Directed by Kamakhya Narayan Singh, the film stars Ulka Gupta, Aditi Bhatia and Aishwarya Ojha in lead roles.

The first instalment, released in 2023, generated similar debate but also received national recognition, winning awards for direction and cinematography.

With certification complete, The Kerala Story 2 is scheduled for theatrical release on February 27. Industry observers expect the film to draw significant attention at the box office due to the ongoing controversy and public discourse surrounding its themes.
