Vaibhav Suryavanshi Named India U19 Captain for South Africa ODIs

Teenage batting sensation Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been appointed captain of the India Under-19 team for the upcoming ODI series against South Africa, marking a major milestone in his rapidly rising cricket career ahead of the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup.

The five-match ODI series will be played from January 3 to 7 at Willowmoore Park in Benoni. Suryavanshi will lead the side in the absence of regular skipper Ayush Mhatre, who has been ruled out of the tour due to a wrist injury. Aaron George has been named vice-captain.

The announcement was made alongside the release of India’s squads for both the South Africa U19 ODIs and the ICC Men’s Under-19 World Cup by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

Reward for rapid rise

Suryavanshi’s elevation comes on the back of a sensational year across formats. He grabbed national attention after smashing a 35-ball century for Rajasthan Royals in the 2025 Indian Premier League, underlining his reputation as one of India’s most explosive young batters.

He further strengthened his case for leadership with a record-breaking performance in the Vijay Hazare Trophy, where he registered the second-fastest List A century by an Indian. Representing Bihar cricket team, Suryavanshi reached his hundred in just 36 balls against Arunachal Pradesh in Ranchi.

His blistering knock of 190 off 84 deliveries, featuring 16 fours and 15 sixes, powered Bihar to a commanding 397-run victory and firmly established him as one of the brightest prospects in Indian cricket.

Injury updates and World Cup focus

Ayush Mhatre and Vihaan Malhotra, both nursing wrist injuries, will miss the South Africa tour and report to the BCCI Centre of Excellence for rehabilitation. The duo is expected to regain fitness in time for the Under-19 World Cup, where they remain part of India’s plans.

Suryavanshi’s leadership credentials have also been recognised at the domestic level. He was recently appointed vice-captain of Bihar for the opening rounds of the 2025–26 Ranji Trophy season, reflecting growing confidence in his maturity and cricketing acumen.

With the Under-19 World Cup approaching, the South Africa ODI series is seen as a crucial preparatory assignment. All eyes will now be on Suryavanshi as he leads a talented Indian side against quality opposition, carrying both form and expectations into the global tournament.
