Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma Haunted by BGT 2024-25 in ODI Return

Senior Indian batters Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma faced a difficult start to their ODI comeback as India were beaten in the 1st ODI against Australia at Optus Stadium, Perth. Kohli was dismissed for a duck, while Rohit managed just eight runs, struggling to handle the pace and bounce from Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood.

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan highlighted that their struggles echo the issues faced during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25. During that series, India’s batting lineup underperformed in Australia, with both Kohli and Rohit failing to deliver crucial runs. The series eventually contributed to their retirement from Test cricket, as their inability to counter Australian conditions was exposed repeatedly.

Speaking on his YouTube channel after the Perth ODI, Pathan said, “Fitness is one thing and game time is another. That is why Rohit looked a bit troubled. It looked like the demons of the BGT were back for Virat. I hope this is not the case in Adelaide and Sydney.” He added that acclimatisation and preparation are key when touring countries like Australia, noting that more game time could have reduced early mistakes against quality pace bowling.

Pathan also observed the technical struggles of both batters. Rohit was troubled by extra bounce from Hazlewood, while Kohli once again poked at deliveries moving away from him—a familiar weakness highlighted during their BGT tour. Despite these early setbacks, Pathan emphasised that players like KL Rahul showed promise, while others like Shreyas Iyer may need technical adjustments.

Following the defeat in Perth, India have moved to Adelaide for the second ODI. The team management has opted to retain the same batting line-up, indicating their belief that Kohli and Rohit can rediscover form in the upcoming matches. The focus will be on leveraging their experience while adapting quickly to Australian conditions.

The Perth ODI serves as a reminder that even legends like Kohli and Rohit must adjust to evolving challenges. While the BGT 2024-25 exposed weaknesses in their technique and mindset, the upcoming ODIs present an opportunity to reaffirm their dominance in international cricket. Fans will be watching closely to see if the senior duo can silence critics and guide India to a series win.
