Lance Watson’s Journey: Polo, Family, and the Olympic Dream

Lance Watson, a third-generation polo player and a standout member of the Jaipur polo team, opens up about his remarkable journey in the sport, his deep connection to India, and the Olympic dream he hopes to share with his children.

Originally from KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa, Watson’s love for polo began at the age of eight. “From as far back as I can remember, all I wanted to do was play polo,” he recalls. While he enjoyed other school sports like rugby and cricket, polo was always his true passion. His grandfather, also a polo player, served as a significant inspiration, nurturing Watson’s early interest in the game.

Watson and his brother Brett later established Absolute Polo, an academy in South Africa dedicated to coaching and professional play. “Absolute Polo is now a well-established setup with fields, stables, and coaching facilities. We aim to nurture young talent and share our love for the sport,” he explains.

A Love for Indian Polo

Having competed across Argentina, England, New Zealand, Malaysia, Dubai, China, Kenya, and Zambia, Watson finds India uniquely compelling. Since arriving in 2020, he has witnessed the sport grow professionally, aided by the introduction of top-level Argentine horses and upgraded playing fields.

Joining the legendary Jaipur team, led by Maharaja Padmanabh Singh, was a milestone. “From the day I got the call to join, I was in disbelief. Since then, we’ve built the team together, and it’s been an incredible journey,” Watson says.

Despite the sport being concentrated in Jaipur, Jodhpur, and Delhi, Watson hopes to see polo expand to other cities, reviving India’s historic club network. He also hints at the possibility of expanding his academy operations to India to support budding talent.

Family and the Olympic Dream

Watson credits his family for keeping him grounded. A father of two, he beams at his children’s growing interest in horses and polo. “My son played his first tournament this year at eight years old, and it was a joy to see. He could become the fourth-generation Watson polo player, but I’ll support whatever path he chooses,” he shares.

Looking ahead, Watson dreams of seeing polo reinstated in the Olympics. “It would give the sport global exposure and inspire the next generation. If not me, maybe my son or daughter will have the chance,” he says.

Through passion, family support, and a lifelong dedication to polo, Lance Watson exemplifies the enduring spirit of the sport and its potential to inspire future generations worldwide.
