The Australian Open 2026 women’s singles final got off to a dramatic start on Friday as Elena Rybakina asserted early control against world No.1 Aryna Sabalenka at a packed Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne.
With the roof closed due to the threat of rain, conditions inside the stadium amplified the atmosphere, creating a fast-paced and noisy setting for the highly anticipated showdown. Rybakina wasted no time settling into the contest, breaking Sabalenka’s serve in the opening game and immediately placing the top seed under pressure.
The Kazakh player’s aggressive baseline hitting and powerful returns rushed Sabalenka early, denying her the time she usually enjoys to set up her trademark groundstrokes. Rybakina followed up the early break by holding serve confidently, racing to a 2–0 lead and maintaining momentum with clean ball-striking and sharp movement.
Sabalenka, chasing a historic third Australian Open title, appeared unsettled in the early stages. Although she managed to hold serve in the third game to stay in touch, frustration was clearly visible as unforced errors crept into her game. Rybakina capitalised on the uncertainty, consolidating her lead to move ahead 3–1 in the opening set.
Former British tennis player Annabel Croft, speaking during the broadcast, observed that Sabalenka looked rushed and panicked on returns. According to Croft, the Belarusian was attempting to strike too early in rallies rather than constructing points patiently, allowing Rybakina to dictate play with pace and depth.
The early exchanges underlined the contrasting styles of the two finalists. While Sabalenka relied on raw power and first-strike tennis, Rybakina combined heavy groundstrokes with composure, finding winners off both wings and repeatedly targeting Sabalenka’s forehand side. The Kazakh’s ability to absorb pace and redirect the ball proved decisive in gaining the upper hand.
The match carried added intrigue given the pair’s recent history. Sabalenka held a narrow edge in their overall head-to-head meetings and had beaten Rybakina in both of their previous Grand Slam encounters, including the Australian Open final three years ago. However, Rybakina arrived in the 2026 final determined to rewrite that narrative.
Sabalenka entered the contest unbeaten in sets throughout the tournament, while Rybakina had impressed with her consistency and dominance on serve, leading the field in aces. The opening games suggested that the Kazakh was prepared to challenge Sabalenka’s authority by taking time away from her and forcing errors.
As the first set progressed, the Melbourne crowd attempted to lift Sabalenka, sensing her struggle to find rhythm. Yet Rybakina remained composed, unfazed by the occasion, and continued to impose herself in rallies.
With the opening set firmly in Rybakina’s control, the early phase of the final set the tone for a potentially thrilling battle between two of the most powerful players in women’s tennis, with momentum swinging decisively in the Kazakh’s favour.
