T20 World Cup 2026: Pat Cummins Ruled Out, Steve Smith Omitted From Australia Squad

Australia have been dealt a major blow ahead of the T20 World Cup 2026, with senior fast bowler Pat Cummins ruled out of the tournament due to a lingering back injury. The injury had already affected Cummins during the recent Ashes series, prompting selectors to take a cautious approach just days before the global event begins.

The defending champions announced their 15-member squad on January 31, with Mitchell Marsh named captain as Australia aim to secure a second T20 World Cup title. Cummins’ absence is the most significant omission from the squad, given his experience, leadership and ability to deliver in high-pressure matches.

Cummins, who serves as Australia’s Test and ODI captain, had struggled with a lumbar issue in recent months and featured in only one Test during the Ashes. Medical staff advised extended rest to avoid aggravating the injury, leading selectors to exclude him from the tournament.

Left-arm pacer Ben Dwarshuis has been named as Cummins’ replacement. Selector Tony Dodemaide said Dwarshuis offers variety with his left-arm pace, along with strong fielding and lower-order batting depth, which suits the team’s overall balance.

Alongside Cummins, veteran batter Steve Smith has also been left out of the squad. Smith, who has not featured regularly in Australia’s recent T20I plans, had earlier acknowledged that his chances of making the T20 World Cup squad were slim. The selectors have instead opted for a younger, more flexible batting lineup suited to modern T20 demands.

Explosive all-rounder Matt Short is another notable omission as Australia prioritised bowling depth and multi-skill players. The squad features significant batting firepower, with Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh expected to open the innings, followed by Josh Inglis, Cameron Green, Glenn Maxwell and Tim David.

Australia’s bowling attack will be spearheaded by Josh Hazlewood and Nathan Ellis, supported by all-rounders Cameron Green and Marcus Stoinis. Spin responsibilities will rest largely on the shoulders of Adam Zampa, with Matt Kuhnemann providing additional variety.

Despite the setback of losing Cummins, selectors remain confident in the squad’s balance and depth. Australia enter the tournament with a strong mix of power-hitting, all-round options and experienced bowlers, though the absence of their premier fast bowler will undoubtedly test the team in crunch moments.
