Border 2 Box Office Day 1: Sunny Deol Film Beats Chhaava, Dhurandhar, Falls Short of Gadar 2

Sunny Deol’s Border 2 made a powerful entry at the domestic box office as it hit theatres on Friday as a major Republic Day weekend release. The war drama opened to solid numbers, reaffirming Deol’s continued box office pull, though it stopped short of matching the historic opening of his previous blockbuster, Gadar 2.

According to early trade estimates, Border 2 earned in the range of Rs 30–35 crore nett on its opening day. While official figures are awaited, industry trackers suggest the film comfortably crossed the Rs 30 crore mark, placing it among the strongest openers of 2026 so far.

With this performance, Border 2 managed to outperform the opening-day collections of two notable films from last year — Chhaava and Dhurandhar. Chhaava, which went on to become the first major Hindi blockbuster of 2025, had collected approximately Rs 33.10 crore nett on its first day. Meanwhile, Dhurandhar, headlined by Ranveer Singh and known for its long theatrical run, had opened at around Rs 33.69 crore nett.

Despite beating these titles, Border 2 fell short of eclipsing Gadar 2, which remains Sunny Deol’s biggest box office phenomenon in recent times. Released in 2023, Gadar 2 had delivered a massive opening of over Rs 40 crore nett on Day 1 and continued to accelerate through its opening weekend, eventually rewriting box office records. The extraordinary success of Gadar 2 is widely believed to have revived audience appetite for legacy franchises led by Deol, paving the way for Border 2.

Directed by Anurag Singh, Border 2 is now expected to benefit significantly from the extended Republic Day holiday window. With Saturday, Sunday and the national holiday falling back-to-back, the film is well-positioned to build momentum over the weekend. Trade analysts believe the film could cross the Rs 100 crore nett mark by the end of Sunday, provided occupancy levels remain steady.

An additional boost is expected on Monday due to Republic Day, which could push the film closer to the Rs 150 crore nett milestone within its first four days. Early audience feedback and word-of-mouth have been largely favourable, particularly praising the film’s scale, emotional beats and patriotic tone — elements that resonate strongly during the holiday period.

A key factor working in Border 2’s favour is the enduring legacy of the 1997 cult classic Border, which continues to enjoy immense recall value across generations. Sunny Deol’s association with the franchise remains its strongest asset, supported by performances from Diljit Dosanjh, Varun Dhawan and Ahan Shetty in pivotal roles.

Produced by T-Series in collaboration with JP Dutta Films, Border 2 is being positioned as a large-scale theatrical experience aimed at mass audiences. While it may not surpass the opening-day numbers of Gadar 2, its strong start indicates that the film has the potential to emerge as one of the biggest hits of the year if momentum sustains through the first week.
