Akshath Anand, a Grade 9 student at Surrey Academy of Innovative Learning in Canada, has developed a wearable medical device designed to detect intravenous (IV) leaks before they become dangerous.
His invention, Veino – IV Safety Monitoring System, has already earned national recognition, winning multiple awards at the prestigious Canada-Wide Science Fair. The device aims to improve patient safety by helping healthcare professionals identify IV complications at an early stage, potentially preventing pain, swelling and tissue damage.
What Is Veino and How Does It Work?
Veino is a smart wearable that continuously monitors intravenous (IV) lines using advanced pressure sensors. The system detects abnormal pressure changes that may indicate IV infiltration, leakage or displacement.
Instead of relying on visible symptoms such as bruising or swelling, the wearable alerts healthcare workers as soon as irregular pressure patterns are detected. This allows nurses and doctors to intervene quickly, reducing the risk of complications and improving patient care.
