China Gives USD 2.2 Million Aid to Nepal After Deadly Flash Flood

China has provided USD 2.2 million in financial assistance to Nepal following the devastating flash floods that have caused widespread destruction and a major loss of life.

The aid was announced as Nepal’s flood death toll rose to 903, while nearly 4,250 people remained missing, according to the figures cited by Nepalese authorities.

China extends emergency assistance

The Chinese government has provided NPR 350 million, equivalent to around USD 2 million, while the Chinese Red Cross has contributed an additional USD 200,000.

Chinese Ambassador to Nepal Zhang Maoming handed over the NPR 350 million cheque to Nepal’s Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle. He also handed over the Chinese Red Cross contribution to the Nepal government.

Zhang conveyed a message from Chinese President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Li Qiang, saying that Nepal was not alone in dealing with the disaster and that China stood with the country.

Flash floods devastate Nepal

The flash flood struck northern and central Nepal on August 26 after what is believed to have been a collapse or avalanche involving ice and rock near the Nepal-Tibet border.

The resulting surge in the Bhotekoshi River swept away homes, vehicles, roads and bridges and damaged hydropower projects.

The disaster has severely affected communities along the river system and triggered large-scale search and rescue operations.

China also affected by disaster

The disaster also caused casualties on the Chinese side of the border.

According to Chinese media reports cited in the report, 16 people were killed in Tibet, while nearly 550 people remained missing.

The rising toll on both sides of the Himalayan border has increased the urgency of rescue, relief and recovery operations.

China’s financial assistance comes as Nepal continues to deal with the extensive damage and search for thousands of people still reported missing.
