Chinmay Sutar celebrates a historic unbeaten 400 for Mizoram against Nagaland in the Ranji Trophy.

Chinmay Sutar made history on Monday, October 19, 2026, by scoring an unbeaten 400 for Mizoram against Nagaland in a Ranji Trophy Plate Division match at the Nagaland Cricket Stadium in Sovima. The left-handed batter became only the second player to score a quadruple century in the history of the Ranji Trophy.

Sutar also joined an elite group of batters who have scored 400 or more runs in a single innings in first-class cricket. The list includes legendary names such as Brian Lara, Don Bradman and Hanif Mohammad.

Before Sutar's achievement, Maharashtra's BB Nimbalkar held the Ranji Trophy record with an unbeaten 443 against Kathiawar in Pune in December 1948.

How Sutar Reached His Historic 400

Sutar remained unbeaten on 400 off 517 deliveries, striking 46 fours and seven sixes during his marathon innings. His performance helped Mizoram declare at 581 for nine.

The milestone came after a promising start to his Ranji Trophy career. In his debut appearance, Sutar narrowly missed a century after being run out for 99.

Before switching to Mizoram in 2026, he represented Mumbai in the Vijay Hazare Trophy. His latest innings has now placed him among the most notable performers in Indian domestic cricket.

Sutar continued scoring even after Mizoram had lost nine wickets. He was on 231 when Lalrempuia came to the crease as the final batter, and he went on to complete his quadruple century before the declaration.

Batters Who Have Scored 400 in First-Class Cricket

Sutar's achievement places him alongside several historic first-class performers:

  1. Brian Lara: 501 not out for Warwickshire against Durham in 1994.
  2. Hanif Mohammad: 499 for Karachi against Bahawalpur in 1959.
  3. Don Bradman: 452 not out for New South Wales against Queensland in 1930.
  4. BB Nimbalkar: 443 not out for Maharashtra against Kathiawar in 1948.
  5. WH Ponsford: 437 for Victoria against Queensland in 1927.
  6. WH Ponsford: 429 for Victoria against Tasmania in 1923.
  7. Aftab Baloch: 428 for Sind against Baluchistan in 1974.
  8. AC MacLaren: 424 for Lancashire against Somerset in 1895.
  9. Sam Northeast: 410 not out for Glamorgan against Leicestershire in 2022.
  10. Graham Hick: 405 not out for Worcestershire against Somerset in 1988.
  11. Brian Lara: 400 not out for West Indies against England in 2004.
  12. Chinmay Sutar: 400 not out for Mizoram against Nagaland in 2026.

A Landmark Moment for Mizoram Cricket

Sutar's innings is a major individual milestone for Mizoram in domestic cricket. His ability to convert a strong start into a quadruple century demonstrated remarkable endurance and concentration across 517 deliveries.

By reaching 400 not out, Sutar has joined a rare group of batters whose performances have become part of first-class cricket history. His innings against Nagaland will stand out as one of the defining achievements of the 2026–27 Ranji Trophy season.
