Duleep Trophy 2026 Final: Tilak Varma vs Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as South Zone Face East Zone

South Zone booked their place in the Duleep Trophy 2026 final after defeating North Zone by seven wickets in the semi-final at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground in Bengaluru on Wednesday.

Captain Tilak Varma led from the front once again, following up his brilliant first-innings century with an unbeaten half-century during the successful run chase. South Zone will now face East Zone in the title clash, setting up an exciting contest involving Tilak Varma and young batting sensation Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

South Zone defeated North Zone after chasing a target of 181 runs. MD Nidheesh played a crucial role in setting up the victory, claiming five wickets as North Zone were bowled out for 297 in their second innings.

North Zone resumed the final day at 256 for seven and managed to extend their lead, with Anshul Kamboj and Nishant Sindhu adding valuable runs. However, Nidheesh struck at important moments, dismissing Kamboj before removing the lower-order batters to complete his five-wicket haul. Sindhu remained unbeaten on 35 as North Zone were eventually dismissed for 297.

South Zone began their chase positively, with Ricky Bhui and Narayan Jagadeesan putting together a 64-run opening partnership. Bhui took an attacking approach and scored 42 runs from 53 balls, including seven boundaries, before being dismissed.

Shaik Rasheed departed soon after, but Jagadeesan and Tilak steadied the innings and ensured South Zone remained in control. Jagadeesan scored 43 before being dismissed, bringing R Smaran to the crease.

Smaran joined captain Tilak Varma in an unbeaten 79-run partnership that sealed South Zone's victory. Tilak remained unbeaten on 51 and completed the chase with a boundary, while Smaran provided valuable support at the other end.

Tilak had already played a decisive role earlier in the match when South Zone were struggling at 80 for five in their first innings. His unbeaten 116, combined with Shreyas Gopal's 87, helped South Zone recover strongly and secure a 117-run first-innings lead through a crucial 175-run partnership.

North Zone attempted to fight back in their second innings, with Sanat Sangwan and Ayush Doseja scoring half-centuries. However, their batting lineup failed to convert promising positions into a substantial advantage, leaving South Zone with a manageable target.

The victory sends South Zone into the Duleep Trophy 2026 final, where they will take on East Zone at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai from September 6.

East Zone reached the final after defeating Central Zone by four wickets in the other semi-final. The summit clash is expected to draw major attention, particularly because it could feature a fascinating battle between South Zone captain Tilak Varma and East Zone's rising young star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi.

With Tilak arriving in the final after an unbeaten century and another unbeaten half-century, South Zone will enter the title clash with strong momentum. East Zone, meanwhile, will look to their young talent, including Sooryavanshi, as they aim to lift the prestigious domestic trophy.
