Churchill Brothers made a memorable start to their Indian Super League (ISL) campaign, defeating two-time champions Mumbai City FC 2-1 at Fatorda despite having just 25 days to prepare for their debut in the competition. Goals from Gaurav Bora and Sebastian Gutierrez secured the victory after a hurried pre-season marked by late arrivals, visa delays and the challenge of assembling a competitive squad.
The Goan club entered the ISL following a takeover in August, acquiring Jamshedpur FC's operating company from Tata Steel for a token ₹100. The deal included the contracts of 12 players and two coaches, providing a foundation for the team but leaving limited time to prepare for the new season.
Coach Dimitris Dimitriou and his squad completed approximately 37 to 38 training sessions in less than four weeks. Some foreign recruits arrived only days before the campaign began, while others were still dealing with visa formalities.
Churchill Brothers Turn Preparation Into Results
Mumbai City, coached by Manolo Marquez, looked more settled during the first half and created several promising opportunities. Churchill Brothers remained organised, however, keeping the score level at the break despite the pressure.
Dimitriou introduced Gaurav Bora at half-time, replacing Alexandre Yeoule. The change quickly paid off when Anil Gaonkar delivered a cross following a short corner in the 57th minute, allowing Bora to head home Churchill's first-ever ISL goal.
The hosts nearly extended their advantage when Wayde Lekay struck the crossbar with a long-range effort. Mumbai responded with three substitutions, but Churchill continued to create opportunities rather than simply defend their lead.
Late Goal Secures a Historic ISL Debut
Churchill Brothers doubled their advantage in the 86th minute. Substitute Stendley Fernandes combined with Sebastian Gutierrez, who finished from inside the penalty area to put the hosts 2-0 ahead.
Mumbai City reduced the deficit deep into stoppage time after Angu fouled Akash Mishra. Sergio Llamas converted the resulting penalty, setting up a tense finish. Churchill nevertheless held on to claim all three points.
Dimitriou praised his players after the match, saying they deserved the victory. He also explained that the team initially focused on understanding Mumbai City's approach before making tactical adjustments to take control of the contest.
East Bengal Next for Churchill Brothers
The win provides Churchill Brothers with an encouraging foundation, but sustaining that performance across a demanding ISL season will be a different challenge. A short preparation period could become more difficult to manage as fixtures accumulate and recovery time becomes limited.
Their next assignment is against defending champions East Bengal FC at Fatorda on October 18. The match will offer another test of how quickly the newly assembled side can adapt to top-flight competition.
For Churchill Brothers, the victory over Mumbai City is more than an impressive opening result. It is proof that their hurried preparations have produced an immediate reward, giving the team confidence as it continues its first ISL campaign.
