Director: Harish Durairaj
Cast: Arjun Das, Anna Ben, Yogi Babu, Vadivukkarasi
Scam-based thrillers have carved out a unique space in Tamil cinema, often combining suspense, clever twists and engaging storytelling. Films in this genre have gained popularity for keeping audiences guessing until the very end. With Con City, director Harish Durairaj attempts to present another story built around deception, this time focusing on a family that survives by pulling off scams.
While the premise is refreshing and supported by a talented cast, the film struggles to maintain consistency, preventing it from becoming a truly memorable entertainer.
Con City follows a family whose livelihood revolves around carefully planned scams. Their confidence, intelligence and unconventional lifestyle make for an intriguing setup that promises an entertaining blend of crime, humour and drama.
As new challenges emerge, the family finds itself navigating situations that test both their skills and personal relationships. The story has enough material for an engaging thriller, but the screenplay often loses focus and shifts between ideas without fully developing them.
(This review avoids major spoilers.)
Arjun Das once again proves why he has become one of the most dependable young actors in Tamil cinema. He carries much of the film with a confident screen presence and delivers a convincing performance throughout.
Anna Ben complements him well with a restrained and natural portrayal. Yogi Babu provides occasional comic relief, while veteran actor Vadivukkarasi adds emotional weight to several scenes.
Although the cast performs sincerely, the screenplay doesn't always provide enough depth for their characters to leave a lasting impact.
Director Harish Durairaj deserves credit for choosing a relatively fresh concept centred around an entire family involved in scams. The film begins with promise and introduces an interesting world that immediately grabs attention.
However, the screenplay gradually becomes uneven. Several sequences feel disconnected, and some narrative choices appear random rather than purposeful. The pacing also fluctuates, making it difficult for the suspense to build consistently.
A tighter script with stronger character development could have transformed Con City into a far more compelling thriller.
The film maintains a decent visual style, and the production design effectively supports its crime-drama setting. The background score helps build tension in important scenes, while the editing keeps the runtime reasonably engaging despite occasional pacing issues.
Overall, the technical departments deliver competent work, even if they cannot fully overcome the screenplay's shortcomings.
Con City offers an interesting idea backed by capable performances, particularly from Arjun Das. While the film has moments that showcase the potential of its unique premise, an inconsistent screenplay and uneven storytelling prevent it from reaching the standards set by some of Tamil cinema's best scam thrillers.
Fans of crime dramas may still find enough to enjoy, especially for the performances, but those expecting a tightly written thriller may leave wanting more.
Con City revolves around a family that makes a living through elaborate scams, blending crime, drama and suspense.
The film features Arjun Das, Anna Ben, Yogi Babu and Vadivukkarasi in key roles.
The film is directed by Harish Durairaj.
If you enjoy crime dramas and scam thrillers, the film offers an interesting premise and solid performances, though the screenplay may not satisfy everyone.
