Emraan Hashmi Reacts to Taskaree’s Global Netflix No.1 Run, Says He Didn’t Expect Worldwide Success

Actor Emraan Hashmi is currently enjoying one of the most dynamic phases of his career, marked by critically noted performances, unexpected viral moments, and a rare global streaming milestone. His crime thriller series Taskaree: The Smuggler’s Web recently secured the top spot on Netflix’s worldwide charts, a feat that the actor admits he never saw coming.

In an exclusive conversation, Hashmi reflected on the sudden global response to Taskaree, saying that while the team was confident about its domestic reception, international success was beyond expectations. According to him, the show’s scale and storytelling resonated far wider than anticipated.

“We were hoping it would do well in the country. I didn’t expect it to go global,” Hashmi said, adding that the feedback pouring in from audiences across regions has been overwhelmingly positive.

Rather than viewing this phase as a personal resurgence, the actor believes the credit lies in a broader shift within the entertainment industry. Hashmi pointed out that storytelling has expanded significantly over the past decade, largely driven by streaming platforms and evolving audience preferences.

“It’s a great time for actors and creative people. The kind of material that’s being written today allows you to explore worlds that were unthinkable earlier,” he said, emphasising that platforms like Netflix have opened doors to layered, unconventional narratives.

Taskaree stood out for Hashmi from the moment it reached him. He described the script as an actor’s dream, noting that the series explores a morally complex universe rarely depicted on Indian screens. The high-stakes crime drama places Hashmi in the role of customs officer Arjun Meena, navigating power, ambition, and ethical grey zones.

The series also features an ensemble cast including Sharad Kelkar, Amruta Khanvilkar, Zoya Afroz, Nandish Sandhu, and Anurag Sinha. Together, the cast helped build a narrative that connected strongly with viewers across markets.

Apart from Taskaree, Hashmi also made headlines for his recent work in Haq, which found appreciation for its grounded storytelling, and his surprise cameo in Ba***ds of Bollywood, which unexpectedly became a talking point online.

Reflecting on the cameo, the actor revealed that it was never meant to be a big moment. “It was a two-day cameo. We were just enjoying the scene, and it blew up. No one expected that,” he said.

Despite the success streak, Hashmi insists there is no calculated strategy driving his choices. For him, the focus remains on honesty in performance rather than chasing outcomes.

“As an actor, you do your job with as much truth as you can. The outcome isn’t in your hands,” he said.

With Taskaree achieving global recognition and his recent projects striking a chord with diverse audiences, Emraan Hashmi’s current run underscores a career shaped by adaptability rather than reinvention — one that continues to evolve alongside an industry undergoing rapid transformation.
