Zakir Khan Reveals Genetic Health Issues Behind Comedy Break, Says He Needs to Prioritise Well-being

Stand-up comedian Zakir Khan has opened up about the reasons behind his prolonged break from live comedy, revealing that health concerns and a history of genetic illnesses in his family compelled him to slow down after years of relentless work.

The comedian addressed the issue during his Papa Yaar tour, where he candidly shared with audiences that he would be stepping away from stand-up comedy for several years to focus on recovery and long-term well-being. Zakir later elaborated on the decision in an interview, explaining that the physical toll of constant touring had become impossible to ignore.

“I need to take care of my health. There are certain genetic illnesses in my family that tend to surface after a particular age,” he said, adding that years of sleep deprivation and overwork had worsened the situation. Zakir admitted that he often slept for just two hours before heading out to perform for thousands of people, a routine that gradually damaged his body.

Reflecting on his journey, the comedian spoke about the pressure he felt as the first person in his family to achieve widespread success. According to Zakir, that sense of responsibility pushed him to prioritise work over rest for nearly a decade, a decision that has now forced him to reassess his limits.

“When you keep your foot on the accelerator for ten straight years, the body is bound to take a hit,” he said. Zakir explained that he initially believed he could manage his health alongside work, but a turning point came during an international tour last year.

“Last year, when we were in the US, I realised it wouldn’t be possible to do both together. That’s when I made this decision,” he added.

During a live performance in Hyderabad, Zakir had earlier informed fans about the length of his planned hiatus. Addressing the audience, he said he would be taking a long break that could extend until 2028, 2029, or even 2030. He described the decision as deeply emotional, expressing gratitude to fans who continue to support him.

“I’m going on a long, long break… to take care of my health and sort out a few other things. Everyone present here right now is very close to my heart,” he told the crowd, adding that their presence meant more to him than words could convey.

Zakir had also previously spoken about his health struggles on social media. In an Instagram post shared last year, he revealed that he had been unwell for over a year but continued working because it felt necessary at the time.

“I’ve been touring for the last ten years. Though I’m extremely blessed to receive your love, touring this extensively is not healthy,” he wrote, detailing a punishing schedule of multiple shows a day, sleepless nights, early-morning flights, and irregular meals.

The comedian acknowledged that ignoring medical advice for too long had worsened his condition. “I absolutely love being on stage, but I’ll have to take a break now. Before it’s too late, I should take the break,” he said, adding that doctors had advised him to go on an extended hiatus after completing his current commitments.

Zakir Khan urged fans to attend his remaining shows, noting that this phase marks the final leg of his comedy journey before a long pause. While the break has disappointed many admirers, his candid admission has also sparked conversations around burnout, mental health, and the physical cost of constant performance in the entertainment industry.
