Gautam Gambhir has explained why Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will have to wait for another T20I opportunity.

Gautam Gambhir has opened up about Vaibhav Sooryavanshi T20I selection, revealing that he personally spoke to the 15-year-old about why he would have to wait for another opportunity despite his impressive recent form.

India are set to face the West Indies in a five-match T20I series from October 6 to 17. The opening combination of Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma remains the preferred choice, with Gambhir stressing that the team cannot make selection decisions based simply on short-term form or social media pressure.

Gambhir Explains Why Vaibhav Must Wait

Vaibhav was not selected for India's recent T20I matches against Afghanistan. Gambhir said he explained to the teenager that established players who have performed consistently over a long period deserve continuity.

According to Gambhir, replacing either Samson or Abhishek after a few low scores would mean ignoring a combination that has delivered significant results.

Vaibhav subsequently impressed at the Asian Games. He scored 38 off 21 balls against Sri Lanka in the semi-final before contributing a quick 15 against Pakistan in the gold-medal match.

However, Abhishek also responded strongly, scoring a match-winning 61 off 28 balls against Pakistan.

Social Media Won't Decide India's Playing XI

Gambhir also rejected the idea that online reactions should influence India's team selection. He maintained that the coach and captain must decide which players give India the best chance of winning.

The head coach pointed to the importance of continuity after India's T20 World Cup success. He argued that one poor series or a few failures should not immediately result in established players being dropped.

Vaibhav's performances have undoubtedly strengthened his case, but Gambhir appears determined to introduce the young opener without unnecessarily disrupting India's existing combination.

With India facing the West Indies in Lucknow, Samson and Abhishek are expected to open once again. For Vaibhav, the message from the coach is clear: the opportunity is coming, but patience is part of the journey.
