India Advises Citizens to Leave Iran Amid Deadly Protests and Rising Tensions

India has issued a strong advisory urging its citizens to leave Iran immediately as nationwide protests continue to escalate into one of the deadliest periods of unrest the country has witnessed in decades. The advisory comes amid reports that the protest-related death toll has crossed 2,500, with violence spreading across hundreds of locations.

The Indian Embassy in Tehran, in coordination with the Ministry of External Affairs, has asked all Indian nationals — including students, pilgrims, business travellers and tourists — to depart Iran using available commercial options. Authorities have also advised against any new travel to Iran until further notice.

According to the official advisory dated January 14, Indian citizens currently in Iran are urged to exercise extreme caution, avoid areas witnessing protests or demonstrations, and remain in constant contact with the Indian Embassy. Nationals have also been instructed to keep their travel and identification documents, including passports and visas, readily accessible at all times.

The advisory further asked Indians who are not yet registered with the Embassy to complete their registration immediately. Emergency helpline numbers and email assistance services have been activated to support those seeking guidance or evacuation-related help.

The situation in Iran has deteriorated rapidly over the past three weeks. What began as demonstrations against soaring inflation and currency devaluation has now transformed into widespread anti-government protests, challenging the ruling establishment directly. The unrest has reportedly spread to nearly 280 locations nationwide, resulting in deadly clashes between protesters and security forces.

International reactions have added to the complexity of the crisis. Donald Trump has publicly urged Iranian protesters to continue their resistance and take control of state institutions, stating that external support was forthcoming, though without offering details. Iranian authorities have rejected these statements, accusing the United States and Israel of encouraging instability and interfering in Iran’s internal affairs.

Amid heightened tensions, reports suggest precautionary measures are being taken by foreign governments in the region. Security alerts have been issued near strategic military installations in West Asia, while Iran has warned neighbouring countries against allowing foreign forces to operate from their territory, threatening retaliation if such actions continue.

Against this volatile backdrop, India has reiterated that the safety of its citizens remains its highest priority. The government has advised all Indians in Iran to closely monitor local developments, follow embassy instructions, and avoid unnecessary movement until they are able to leave safely.

Officials have also stressed that any Indian national requiring assistance should immediately reach out to the Embassy in Tehran through official communication channels, as the situation on the ground remains unpredictable and fluid.
