India commemorated its 76th Constitution Day on Wednesday with a grand national celebration at the Central Hall of Samvidhan Sadan, honouring the historic moment when India adopted its Constitution on November 26, 1949. The event brought together the country’s top leadership, including President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan, Union Ministers, and Members of Parliament. Since 2015, November 26 has been officially observed as Constitution Day to deepen public engagement with India’s democratic foundations.
The ceremony began with President Murmu leading the reading of the Preamble, reinforcing India’s commitment to justice, liberty, equality and fraternity—principles that continue to guide the country’s democratic journey. Addressing the gathering, she emphasised the significance of the Constitution as a living document that adapts to the nation’s evolving social and political aspirations. She also highlighted the importance of constitutional literacy, urging citizens to understand the duties and responsibilities that accompany their rights.
A major highlight of the event was the release of the Constitution in nine newly translated Indian languages, an initiative aimed at broadening access and ensuring that people from diverse linguistic backgrounds can engage directly with the country’s supreme legal text. Officials noted that this step aligns with the government’s vision of promoting inclusivity, national integration and equal participation in democratic processes.
The ceremony also marked the launch of a commemorative publication titled ‘Art and Calligraphy in India’s Constitution’, showcasing the intricate artwork and unique calligraphy incorporated into the original Constitution. Featuring contributions from renowned artists such as Nandalal Bose and Beohar Rammanohar Sinha, the booklet highlights how aesthetics and cultural symbolism were woven into the very foundation of the Republic. Parliamentary officials described the release as an effort to bring renewed attention to the creative and intellectual brilliance behind the Constitution.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing invitees, underscored the enduring relevance of constitutional values in shaping India’s future. He stated that the Constitution is not merely a legal document but a roadmap for nation-building. Modi emphasised the responsibility of institutions and citizens alike to uphold the principles laid down by the framers and to work collectively toward building a stronger, more inclusive India.
Vice President C. P. Radhakrishnan echoed similar sentiments, noting that the Constitution remains India’s greatest instrument for social transformation, economic development and democratic empowerment. He said that celebrating Constitution Day is a reminder of the sacrifices of those who envisioned a free, just and progressive India.
The event concluded with reflections on India’s democratic journey, the role of constitutional institutions, and the continued commitment to safeguarding the values that define the world’s largest democracy. Across the country, government offices, schools, and civic institutions also held Preamble readings and awareness programmes to mark the day.
