Mahayuti Sweeps Maharashtra Local Polls, MVA Faces Internal Rift

The ruling Mahayuti alliance registered a sweeping victory in Maharashtra’s municipal council and nagar panchayat elections, tightening its grip on local governance while exposing visible strains within the opposition Mahavikas Aghadi.

The Bharatiya Janata Party-led Mahayuti alliance secured control of 207 out of 288 president posts across local bodies, delivering a decisive blow to the opposition. In contrast, the MVA managed to win only 44 posts, marking a significant electoral setback.

The results have triggered sharp reactions within the opposition camp. A spokesperson from Shiv Sena (UBT) publicly criticised the Indian National Congress, accusing it of lacking grassroots commitment in the state. The spokesperson remarked that Congress behaves like a “tourist in Mumbai,” alleging that the party campaigns briefly before retreating after electoral losses.

Amid the fallout, the Congress announced that it will contest upcoming civic elections independently, signalling a possible reconfiguration of opposition politics in Maharashtra. The announcement comes at a crucial time as political parties begin positioning themselves for the high-stakes Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation elections.

Leaders from the victorious Mahayuti alliance expressed confidence that the results reflect public trust in governance focused on development and welfare. They said the mandate demonstrates voter approval of people-centric policies implemented across the state.

The outcome of the local body elections is being viewed as a significant political indicator ahead of larger urban contests, particularly in Maharashtra, where control of civic institutions often shapes broader electoral momentum.
