Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum has filed a formal complaint after a man groped her and attempted to kiss her during a public walk in Mexico City, a disturbing incident that has intensified national conversations about gender-based violence. The episode, captured on video and widely shared online, underscores what Sheinbaum described as the daily vulnerability faced by women across the country.
A day after the footage went viral, Sheinbaum addressed the nation with a pointed message about the wider implications of the assault. “If this happens to the president, where does that leave all the young women in our country?” she asked, stressing that women’s physical autonomy and safety must be protected at all levels. “No man has the right to invade a woman’s personal space.”
The incident occurred as Sheinbaum walked from the National Palace to the Ministry of Education, greeting citizens in the historic district. The video shows a middle-aged man approaching her, placing an arm around her, touching her chest, and leaning in to kiss her. She immediately pushed him away before aides intervened. Her security detail appeared to be at some distance, raising questions about the lapse in protection.
Sheinbaum later said the man seemed intoxicated. He was arrested later that evening.
Following the assault, the president called on the federal Women’s Ministry to undertake a review of harassment-related statutes across all states. She emphasised that behaviour of this nature should be categorised as a punishable criminal offence, noting significant inconsistencies in how harassment is defined and prosecuted. At present, only about half of Mexico’s states legally classify sexual harassment as a crime.
Sheinbaum also criticised the media outlet Reforma for publishing still images taken directly from the assault footage. She said such use amounted to “re-victimisation” and violated the principles of Mexico’s digital violence laws, which prohibit the distribution of content that harms or humiliates victims. The Women’s Ministry echoed her concerns, urging news organisations to exercise restraint and uphold victims’ rights.
The incident has again drawn focus to Mexico’s alarming levels of violence against women. Government figures recorded 821 femicides in 2024 and more than 500 cases in the first nine months of 2025 — numbers that activists believe capture only a fraction of the real toll. Feminist groups, while condemning the assault on the president, have simultaneously renewed calls for stronger investigative mechanisms and higher conviction rates.
While Sheinbaum’s complaint highlights the urgency of legal and cultural change, the public reaction suggests that Mexico’s battle against gender-based violence remains far from over. Her decision to speak openly has pushed the issue into the centre of national discourse, reaffirming the need for stronger protections, consistent enforcement, and a shift in societal attitudes.
