MK Stalin Setback as Madras High Court Rejects Plea Against TVK's Kolathur Win

In a setback to former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK chief MK Stalin, the Madras High Court has dismissed his plea challenging the victory of TVK candidate VS Babu from the Kolathur Assembly constituency in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly elections.

Stalin was defeated by VS Babu by a margin of 8,795 votes in Kolathur. The result was among the major political developments of the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, in which actor Vijay's Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam emerged as the single largest party.

A bench comprising Chief Justice SA Dharmadhikari and Justice G Arul Murugan ruled that Stalin's petition was not maintainable. A detailed order from the court is awaited.

In his petition, Stalin had alleged irregularities in the voting process and sought verification of Electronic Voting Machines used during the election. He had requested verification of 14 EVM sets, representing around 5% of the 286 EVMs used in the Kolathur constituency.

The request was based on a verification mechanism laid down by the Supreme Court.

Stalin had applied for the EVM verification process on May 7, three days after the election results were declared on May 4. However, he argued in his writ petition that the verification process began only on July 29.

The dismissal of the petition means that the legal challenge against VS Babu's victory in Kolathur has suffered a setback at the Madras High Court. The court's detailed order is expected to provide further clarity on the grounds on which Stalin's plea was rejected.

The Kolathur result has drawn significant political attention because Stalin, a major figure in Tamil Nadu politics and former chief minister, lost the constituency to the TVK candidate.
