Veeramani POCSO Case: TVK, DMK Clash Over Police Probe and Video Evidence

A political dispute has intensified in Tamil Nadu over the handling of the POCSO case involving granite businessman R Veeramani, with the ruling TVK questioning the earlier investigation and the DMK defending its actions.

The case was registered in October 2025 after police received a pen drive containing footage that allegedly showed a minor being sexually assaulted. Investigators later sought to close the case, citing insufficient evidence and difficulties in identifying the girl. A special POCSO court rejected the closure report and ordered further investigation. The girl was subsequently traced and her statement recorded, while the investigation expanded to identify additional alleged survivors.

Former DMK Law Minister S Regupathy has said there was no attempt to protect Veeramani and that the investigation was kept pending while authorities sought additional evidence. He also pointed to the prompt registration of the FIR after the original complaint.

Tamil Nadu Law Minister CTR Nirmal Kumar has challenged Regupathy’s account, particularly his reference to the video being unclear because of shadows. Nirmal Kumar questioned how the former minister knew details about the footage and argued that investigators should have sought more time rather than pursuing a closure report.

The dispute comes as the reopened investigation continues. Veeramani and associates have been arrested, while authorities are examining the handling of the original probe and allegations of possible interference.
