Mumbai Price Hike: CNG at Rs 88, Milk at Rs 102, Auto and Taxi Fares Rise

Mumbai residents are facing higher everyday expenses from September 1 as CNG, PNG, auto and taxi fares and tabela milk prices have all increased. The simultaneous price revisions are expected to put additional pressure on household and commuting budgets.

CNG prices in Mumbai and surrounding areas have gone up by Rs 2 per kg, taking the revised rate to Rs 88 per kg. Mahanagar Gas Limited has also increased the price of domestic PNG by Rs 1 per SCM.

The new CNG and PNG rates came into effect from midnight on September 1. The company attributed the increase to higher international gas prices and increased costs of purchasing spot RLNG amid continuing tensions in West Asia.

The CNG price hike will affect around 13 lakh vehicle owners across areas including Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, Latur, Dharashiv and parts of Karnataka. Around 30 lakh domestic PNG consumers will also be affected by the higher rates.

CNG prices have also recently increased in Delhi, where the revised rate has reached Rs 86.98 per kg after a Rs 3.89 increase.

Travel by auto and taxi in Mumbai has also become more expensive from September 1 following a fare revision approved by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Transport Authority.

The minimum auto fare has increased to Rs 27, while the minimum fare for black-and-yellow taxis is now Rs 33. The per-kilometre auto fare has risen from Rs 17.14 to Rs 18.22.

For taxis, the per-kilometre fare has increased from Rs 20.66 to Rs 21.90. Passengers travelling the first 1.5 kilometres will now pay Rs 33 instead of the earlier Rs 31.

Auto and taxi drivers have been given until the end of November to recalibrate their meters according to the revised fares. Drivers who do not update their meters within the specified period could face penalties.

Mumbai has more than 4.5 lakh autorickshaws and over 50,000 taxis. The previous fare increase was implemented in February 2025.

Milk prices have also risen, adding another expense for consumers. Tabela milk, which was earlier priced at Rs 93 per litre, will now cost Rs 102 per litre.

The revised milk price is expected to remain in effect until February 28 next year. Milk producers have cited rising cattle-feed costs as a reason for the increase.

Prices of grains, tur chuni and chana chuni, which are used in cattle feed, have increased by up to 25%, according to milk producers.

The combined impact means Mumbai residents will now pay more for fuel, household gas, local transport and certain milk supplies from the beginning of September.
