Andhra Man Ties Up Wife, Thrashes Her With Belt as Neighbours Try to Intervene

A disturbing incident from Andhra Pradesh’s Prakasam district has come to light after a video surfaced showing a man brutally assaulting his wife in full public view. The accused, identified as Gurunatham, can be seen tying his wife’s hands, thrashing her with a belt, and kicking her repeatedly as she screamed in pain. Neighbours who rushed to intervene were unable to stop the assault.

The woman, a mother of four, works at a bakery to provide for her children. According to local reports, Gurunatham lives with another woman in Hyderabad but frequently returns to his village to harass his wife and demand money.

This is the second case of domestic abuse reported from Andhra Pradesh in recent weeks. In August, Srividya, a 24-year-old lecturer from Krishna district, died by suicide barely six months after her marriage. In a note she left behind, she accused her husband, Rambabu, a village surveyor, and his family of subjecting her to relentless harassment. She alleged that Rambabu, who often returned home drunk, began abusing her within a month of their wedding, inflicting both mental and physical torture. Srividya detailed incidents of being humiliated in front of another woman, physically assaulted, and beaten so severely that her head was slammed against the bed and she was punched in the back.

In her final note, she held her husband and his family responsible for her death, urging that they “should not be spared under any circumstances.” Both incidents highlight the alarming persistence of domestic violence in Andhra Pradesh, raising urgent questions about women’s safety and legal protections in the state.
